The sheer range of things we take for granted today that started in the Islamic world is awesome.

I don't know that this need to be added to the OP, but since it was, note that not all fundamentalists are terrorists.

Muslim fundamentalists, like Christian fundamentalists, are a minority in their respective religions. It is the Extremists that are the problem.

I think a lot of beliefs have their radicals/terrorists. When those religions support and protect the radicals/terrorists then they also become morally responsible for the actions of the few.

Yes, there were great advances in science, medicine, and literature in the Muslim world at the time Europe was going through the dark ages. I believe that the greatest library at the time was in Constantinople.

History is a marvelous thing. It can teach us what has happened from the writers point of view. There is an old saying that "history is written by the victor". Or in some cases what is politically correct at the moment. History can and does mark great moments of the past.

If we are looking at ancient history, maybe we ought to look at something more current. Following is something that was sent to me. .

It was the Islamist world that discovered algebra (discovered is appropriate as maths and physics are universal). Algebra greatly simplified problem solving mathematics.

They also discovered or invented so many other things we now take for granted, that allowed a civilised and educated world to develop. Unfortunately their written works were destroyed in antiquity. I think at Alexandria.

The Islamic world is also where civilisation began, even the garden of Eden as geographically described in the bible is scientifically placed in modern day Iraq.

They acknowledge Christ as a prophet and the Old testament teachings.
