Transgender child to enter Florida school Hassan

SUMMARY: A transgender child in Broward County, Fla.,
whose parents say she hates having a penis will start
kindergarten this fall as a girl.

A transgender child in Florida, genetically a boy,
will be admitted to kindergarten this fall as a girl,
the Miami Herald reported.

She's believed to be the youngest trans child admitted
into south Florida schools, which have been praised
for their accommodations toward transgender students.

Mental health professionals have diagnosed the child
with gender dysphoria, a condition in which a person
believes that he or she is the opposite gender.

"Gender dysphoria can take place during a fetus'
development in the womb," gender specialist and
sexologist Marilyn Volker, Ph.D, of Miami, told the
Herald.

The child has been examined for two years, and it has
been determined that she is not going through a phase.

She has told her parents that she hates having a penis
and often hides it between her legs, the Herald
reported.

The Broward County school system has agreed to admit
the child into school as a girl. Though she despises
boys' clothes, she will dress in gender-neutral
clothing and use a gender-neutral name.

"The school officials have agreed to continue working
with the family and medical professionals to help
create an environment that will maximize the child's
ability to learn and grow within the school system,"
said family attorney Karen Doering, who specializes in
defending the rights of LGBT people.

After consulting with pediatric endocrinologists,
counselors, and school officials, the parents -- an
attorney and a counselor -- have decided it is in the
child's best interest to live as a girl.

Tobias Packer, South Florida field organizer for
Equality Florida, who is transgendered, praised the
Broward and Miami-Dade school systems, saying they are
exemplary "when it comes to the rights of
transgendered people." If you'd like to know more, you

Hi Danette
Thanks for that link. "NewTimes" is a rather liberal newspaper down here, and wouldn't hesitate to run a story the mainstream papers might hold back on. This topic is also brought up below in "transgendered links" and as I had said there..although I read the news daily, I had never seen mention of it before that article. And I live there..sheeeesh. Broward County (Fort Lauderdale and burbs) is rather liberal and probably more accepting of us than most other locales, but.....locally, this story still seems to be kept low-keyed. It could be for protection of the girl and her family, which is a good thing because they will be going through heck. I do wish them the best of luck.
