Born in Los Angeles on March 15, 1947 this phenomally great slide player with eclectic tastes was voted 8th in Rolling Stones "100 greatest guitar players" yet most don't know his name. Session guitarists who played with The Rolling Stones,Captain Beefheart,Taj Mahal,Little Feat,John Lee Hooker and formed the group"Little Village with,Nick Lowe,John Hiatt and Jim Keltner.
He did the music scores forThe Long Riders,Paris Texas and Southern Comfort yet he doesn't read music. Considered a world musician and was responsible for "The Bueno Vista Social Club" recording of Cuban musicians that sold 5 million copies worldwide.
He was a session guitarist on The Stones Beggars Banquet and Let it bleed even turning down an offer to join the band. Did haunting slide solo on Sister Morphine and showed Keith Richards how to use the "open G tuning".
My favorite guitarist and his albums Chicken Skin Music and Paradise and Lunch are also my favorites. I wanted to give my son his first name but was overuled by the Warden(my wife!). Who is this great guitar player?

Jeannie

PS. The Warden called! She's still alive! It's Katie's graduation at UH on Sunday and she said" We are all going out to dinner at La Trottaria in Avon. There will be 10 of us. Who is going to pay for it?" Three guesses Beautiful and the first two don't count! It was perfect timing. I was listening to The Allman Brothers Live at the Filmore. One of my favorite tunes. Whipping post! It hurts soooo good!

My favortite song is on his album!
One tune from Paradise and Lunch called "A married man's a fool" is my favorite. Ry knew something I didn't.
A married man's a fool
To think that his wife
Will love nobody else but him
She sticking by you
All of your life
The chances are mighty slim
Who's that backsliding
Out of your back gate
Tell me about!

PS. I was lucky enough to see Ry and John Hiatt in 1972 in a small club called The Paradise in Boston. Four dollar cover. Sweet!
