I was listening to NPR today on a discussion about video gamers, particularly those that are conducted over the net. An aside to the conversation was "70% of the guys" playing these games portray female characters. They talked about how the gamers use this as a chance to discard "accidents of birth" and get out of the constructs of male characters.

I don't play video games, so I don't know much about it. Just thought it was interesting that such a high percentage use female characters. Women gamers, OTOH, don't seem to take on male characters nearly as often - they had no figures but all in the discussion thought that women tend to portray women.

In every massively multiplayer online role playing game I have played, I have used female characters. It's fun dressing them up, and they're nice to look at. It does get out of hand sometimes though, what with alot of guys hitting on me. I used to role play along with it... until I broke someones heart. :(

I've been using female characters in video games ever since they started giving players the option. I think my first favorite character was the "Street Fighter" Chun Li. More recently, I've been using female characters in the Xbox games "Jade Empire" and "Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords". I find that the character interactions are more interesting if you play the lead as a female.

So funny... I can just imagine how POed those guys hitting on you would have been had they known the truth! :)

On an unrelated topic, have you all ever played Extreme Beach Volleyball for the Xbox? The whole point of the game is to dress these gorgeous women up in fancy swimsuits. My little brother bought it hoping that it was a great sports game (with sexy women, of course) and he later regretted it, calling it a "shopping game". Of course, my SO and I enjoy it now.
