During a research program a Red Cross worker discovered that the town’s most successful lawyer had never contributed to the Red Cross Appeals.
The RC worker rang the lawyer and pointed this out to him, saying,” During my research I see that you have an annual income of over two million dollars, yet I see that you’ve never given a cent to our appeals. Wouldn’t you like to give something back to the community who supports your business so heavily?”
The lawyer ponders for a few moments then replys,” Firstly, did your research also show you that my mother is extremely ill and has medical bills pouring in at several times in excess of her annual income?”
Duly embarrassed the RC worker says,”Er, um, no I didn’t know that, I’m very sorry.”
The lawyer goes on,”And did you know that my disabled brother is blind and confined to a wheelchair?”
Totally embarrassed now the RC worker begins to stutter and stammer out an apologetic reply but was duly interrupted with the lawyer saying,”And did you know that my sister is recently widowed, penniless, with 4 young children?”
The humiliated RC worker is now totally beaten and simply says,”I had no idea I’m so sorry.”
The lawyer replies,”Well you should be and get this, if I don’t give a cent to them why should I give you any?”
