You were lucky. The 4 years I was at sea, the ship would periodically get sour evaporators, which was how we got our drinking water, sometimes due I think to young seamen pushing the time a bit long between treatments, but also due to the critters in the raw sea water that provided, ultimately, our drinking water. Happend right before we where hit in our dry stores by a North Vietnamese shore battery (4 inch gun) that flooded the compartment that had all of the stored toilet paper and most of the paper towels. Took three weeks to get new store of TP by sitrep. It was very annoying to be sitting on the firing line in support of troops onshore and watch the supply ship go steaming by on its way to take the admiral of 7th fleet (who was riding on a carrier, of course) his lobsters for dinner. We couldn't even clear away a space for a helo to supply us due to being at action stations. Took a message in the clear for all the world to hear and read in order for us to get toilet paper. Never lacked for it again, I must say.
