I don't mind the Doctor, it's our Health care system I don't "care" for. As Ralitsa pointed out, it's a bit of a scam.
Some people know their bodies quite well and I have the added advantage of a Nurse who shares my bed. Yet I still have to pay my GP for a visit to get a referral to a specialist who I've seen on a annual basis for a few years now so he can review my lab results and renew my prescription. There once was a time where you could call the doctor (at home if need be) spend 5 minutes conversing and walk to the pharmacy and pick up the medication to treat your ailment. (sigh) **Sorry** I didn't mean to jump on a soapbox.
Thanks for the story link Susan. Personally, I don't have a problem talking to my physician. I just hate all the $$ I have to spend.

I have been dealing with my Dr for 35 yrs and we have had a great relationship. Currently, he has introduced three new associates into the paractice with the expectation of moving components of his practice to them. With this in mind he has suggested to us that for non serious issues, we make an appointment with the "New Kids on the Block" so as to get comfortable with them. So far, the female Dr is better and well versed in taking care of me than one of the young guys. Hopfull, all will turn out as the Prime Dr. wants input from the long time patients as to the success of the new staff...

The idea of a doctor prescribing medication after a phone conversation is not reassuring.....

Zari -

I do that all the time with my doctors, and with no problems at all. However, they all know my medical (and legal) background, they know me, they know I've done my homework, kept a record of my symptoms, ruled things out (or in, as the rare case may be), and any time they decided to run tests to prove what I tell them, I'm always proven correct. If I felt it was something really serious, then I would also tell them what tests or blood work I want performed, and why. Yes, I do follow up with office visits, just for them to cover their backsides.

Therefore, if I call them and tell them what I'm experiencing, or what scrip/test(s) I need and why, 99% of the time I get what I want . . . because I've proven to them I know what I'm talking about and not a hypochondriac, scrip abuser, etc.

It's called being my own patient advocate.

I've known far too many people who doctor shop and get multiple prescriptions for the same meds, or for various different meds. I realize you can do the same thing when you actually see them.

Still, for a doctor to want to see you before they prescribe meds, especially if they are new medications or medications for a new illness, is just the doctor being responsible and not the doctor trying to gouge your checkbook, in my opinion.
