Mold in the house. Please Do Not Ignore It

I'm posting this to every forum I frequent to warn members of the dangers.

When we moved in to our house a little under 2 years ago we noticed a damp musty smell from the tiny en-suite bathroom. When I say tiny I mean it. It has a toilet basin and shower is 2' 11” X 10'. We assumed the smell was just from being closed up and having three sources of water in a small room. We aired it out and cleaned all surfaces thinking it was done. However the landlord had put an unsealed hardwood floor in their and even with a mat by the shower water would drain through cracks in the planks.

Fast forward to last Thanksgiving and my wife woke me me in the wee small hours complaining of shortness or breath, sweating, back and chest pains. She had an MI back in 2009 so I called 999 to get the ambulance out. They showed up and took her in she was diagnosed with SVT with a heartbeat of 224. After treatment in ReSus she stabilized and was discharded a day later. None the wiser to the cause.

We returned home and a month later she was back in with VF again no know cause, treated...discharged

5 weeks later back in with VT a bucket load of tests still showed no cause…discharged

With the stress of packing for an international move decided to treat ourselves to a few days in a hotel. While there she was fine, no breathing problems, heart rate and BP within norms. However we had to return to the house to meet with a rep from Pickfords to get a quote on the move. We were there for less than two hours and went back to the hotel. That night she was in trouble and back to A&E. We are on first name terms with the ReSus doctor and head nurse.

Finally Dr James (ReSus Consultant) asked if there were any environmental factors that could contribute to her condition. I mentioned the musty smell and he confirmed that long term exposure can create hypersensitivity. She has not been back since and is fine now. A follow up with her GP confirmed what Dr James had said.

I'm not effected by it so from now on I'll go back and she stays in the hotel. We're staying in the hotel until the 24th

PLEASE, PLEASE FOR YOUR SAKE AND THOSE YOU LOVE DO NOT IGNORE ANY SIGNS OF MOLD, DAMP AND MUSTY SMELLS IN YOUR HOME.

Sometimes it is amazing the things that can affect our health, and they are the things which are the most unlikely cause.
I am lucky that I have a GP who is very thorough in investigating the root cause of any problems I have, and I have to say that because of this thoroughness, I am still around to talk about it ( I ended up having a quadruple heart bypass operation), despite me telling him I have felt no pains in my chest region or elsewhere.

Hi Katrina,

Yes it is a blessing to have a Doctor/GP who investigates rather that just diagnoses and treats. Dr Robert James at the RD&E ReSus dept is just out of the military (RAF) and thankfully hasn't been beaten down by the stress of the NHS. He wanted to dig deeper into the root cause.

Our GP Dr Symons is also good but being a GP he's kind of swamped. A country Doctor with one heck of a practise area

Well we've haven't been back to the house since the night of the 30th Jan and I'm beyond pleased to say my wife is a lot better. Her sats are back to normal with a saturation of 97%-100% her heart rate is back to normal as is her BP.

WOW a quad bypass! glad to hear it went well (I assume it did???) and you have a Doctor who like to dig into things.
