Any of you gals computer techies?

Post by Jeannie »

Hello ladies. Hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have a computer question. When I try to go on the chat board on this site the computer always just sends me back to the previuosly viewed page. My kids who are away at college are computer savy but don't know about my little secret. My wife Mini, who moved out in October, told me if I tell the kids she would have to kill me. How understanding! I think it would be inappropriate at this time to ask my kids to fix the computer so I could access the chat room on my transgendered web site. I like living!
If there is a simple solution(I stress simple!) please help or PM me.
Remember,I'm 55. I'm still waiting for the 8 track to make a comeback and my VCR has been flashing 12 o'clock for ten for the last years. I also am the only person on the face of the earth who doesn't own a cell phone.
Have a wonderful December and I love all you very special ladies. Aren't we the best! I think of a Hedwig song lyric. "Only God could ever plan, more than a woman or a man" Do what you love and love what you do! Big hugs and kisses to all. Make sure you wipe the lipstick off your face so your SO's don't get jealous! If they do,TOO BAD!

Love

Jeannie, tell us what happens if you use the right button on your mouse to click on chat, and then select the 'open in new window' option in the pop-up menu.

Thank you Donna . I right clicked and selected Open new window but a box appeared with the background of this site and just went back to your message. Oh well back to the drawing board.
Donna, I always read your posts and you are so nice to all the ladies. Big Hugs. We are all here to make each other feel good about ourselves, aren't we? We have enough people out there making us feel bad! When I'm on this site it is a perfect world and I thank you all. You're all wonderful. What a beautiful group of human beings. Aren't we special? Too bad most other people don't realize it. Well it's their lose! Love every single one of you.

Love
Jeannie

PS Everyone have a wonderful holiday.

Hi Jeannie,

First off, you want to make sure you don;t have any viruses. It's a good idea to run your antivirus software regularly to scan the computer if there are any viruses [hey you never know]

Second, what browser do you use? Internet Explorer? AOL? Netscape? Mozilla Firefox? Something else?

If you use IE [Internet Explorer] then have you tried deleting all your cookies? Sometimes that can be the problem, whereas fixing it can be as simple as a cookie deletion and a reboot.
DELETING COOKIES:
1. Click on 'Tools' in your browser and then select 'Internet Options'.

2. Under the 'Temporary Internet Files' section, click the button marked 'Delete Cookies'.
Now close your browser and try signing in again. If that doesn't work, try rebooting your system and then sign in again.

If that doesn't work or even if you have ANY questions, feel free to PM me... :) [I did the computer tech thing for a couple of years, please PM me if you still have trouble]

* hugs *
Live it. Love it. OWN IT.

Lorna is correct in deleting cookies.
However, I have found that IE does not delete all cookies nor does it delete all files in the Temp Internet folder.
What I do to ensure that all things are clean is this:
1. Go to start
2. Click on Search
3. Enter "Temp*.*" in the search (No Quotes) All or part of the file name area.
4. Change look in: to be be My Computer by using the drop down selection arrow. This will broaden the search to the entire computer. Not just to you computer sign on but to all ausers that have access to the computer and sign on independently of you. Also make sure that the drop down for Include hidden and System files is checked.
5. Hit search. This will take a few moments - minutes to provide the results which can be numerous.
6. When complete, click on the column called name and this will sort the information that it found.
7. Locate the directory " Temporary Internet Files". You will see several of these. They should have an extension like:
C:\Documents and Settings/something\Local Settings
where the word something could say Default User Owner your sign on name.
For each of these folders right mouse click it and select open.
you will than be provided a folder called Content.ie5. Right mouse click it and you will than be provided a list of additional folders.
Right click each of the folders - open them ,
From the window menu bar, click "edit"
select "Select All"
Hold down your Shift key and than hit delete.
You will receive a pop ut to delete selected cookies
Click Yes
When all files are deleted, hit the back buttion on the widow menu bar and this will bring you up one level in the search results.
Remember, to go down the chain for all the sub folders in Tempory Internet files and do the same.
When you completed all sub folders of the first Temporay Internet Folder, and you can tell this by looking at the date and time stamp of the sub folders Click the back button on the the Windows menu button and go up a level again.
Select the next folder for Tempory Internet Files and do the same thing.
Do this for all folders.
Next,
Find the folders call "Temp" and do the same thing of opening the folder, selecting all the entries, and deleting them.
The purpose of holding down the shift key for the delete process is to delete the files and not move them into you Recycle Bin.
This should clean up your machine completely.
Then next thing is to change your options in Internet Explorer by clicking on tools, than Internet Options.
Change the field: Days to keep pages in history to 1 or 0 not the default of 20.
Than click on setting and change the option for "Check for newer versions of stored pages to be "Never" This eliminates a great deal of slow response for access to the internet
The last thing is to Click on Advanced tab and do this in this sequence:
1: Click on Restore Defaults
2: Scroll down and locate the following items under the Security area: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed. and turn it on by clicking on the box next to it. A green check will be placed in the box.
If you do everything periodically, you will get a lot of junk off your computer.

As a side note, I have create a folder on the desk to called "System Mainteance" and in it, I have created short cuts to each of the Temp folders on my computer and weekly, some times daily, will go and uese the short cuts to get to the folders so that I am able to clean up everything.

Hello ladies. Right now I'm at work but when I get home I'll follow your instructions. Thank you so much for taking the time to write all your suggestions. You're the best. Now I have a reason to dress tonight when I get home! There are two other excuses I always use to dress up. If the sun comes up and if it gets dark at night.
As for paying for your expertise, remember what the duck told the waiter at the country club restaurant"Put it on my bill" OK,OK that's really a bad one .Hey! They can't all be winners! Big hugs.

Ladies, thanks again for your help. I did everything you gals suggested. Everything on my computer works just fine but I can't go on the chat room and my email will open up on hotmail but when I click on a meaasge it won't open up. I feel so bad. :( There are a whole bunch of messages from all you wonderful ladies but I can't read them. I always answer my email if someone takes the time and effort to write to me. My sincere apologies to anyone on this board who emailed me. I'm not ignoring you. Forgive me. I think I have to take this computer into the techie to fix it. I do have a great place and the people there are honest and inexpensive.
Glad it's friday. My day started out fabulous. I picked up the mail this morning as usual and there was a 10 dollar off anything from Victorias Secret for my birthday. Life is good. Another reason to shop! Big hugs and kisses. Love every last one of you. No matter what anyone says we are the best of both worlds. Think of all those poor soles who are just male or female. I feel for them.

Jeannie:
Check the setting for your popup blocker if you have one installed.
Navigate around and see if there is anything that has disable the ability to view this web page and anything that has to do with blocking Hotmail.com
Were you able to get into Hotmail prior to doing everything that was asked of you...
Let me know...
I will be on line for a few more minutes and leaving at 5:15 est. be back around 8:30 est.

Jeannie,

Can you receive messages on the forum? Can you send them? If so, please let me know by sending me a PM and I will answer. I'm in New York this weekend but I will be back home next week. I might be able to help you.

Hugs, Paige
