My Space Suit

Post by Danielle La Belle »

While teaching in college, I have had the opportunity to express many personal ideas. One of those which I favor is the original concept of "The Space Suit."

We live on planet Earth. Earth, like other planets in our solar system revolves around the sun. This for the most part is a typical theme through-out the known cosmos.

Since it is possible that there are others living on planets in space, one can safely assume that they too look at their view of the sky and wonder what is in [outer space] as we do.

So that puts us in [outer space] for someone. Therefore, living on the planet as we do, we wear a "Space Suit" so that we can be seen and observed by others with similar design. “Your body is a Space Suit.”

Inside of this space suit, rests the real person that respectively represents the entity that "is the Space Suit (body)." I am that I am and therefore the body becomes part of me but always in some form, separate from my internal self.

My extensive reading on the subject of cross dressing and in general the TG community can be expressed as such. We are wearing a Space Suit, for some that is felt to be incorrect in it’s design; while for others they have made peace with this and only seek to be acknowledged in a positive way by their peers, friends, associates and the general public.

Humans, in their Space Suit’s continually observe and have a need to identify with the population around them in general. Providing that you dress your Space Suit in traditional clothing socialized and prescribed by the immediate populace, things typically go well.

On average, we can expect no more than 100 years to collectively live out our experiences. Knowing this, we as a society put great restraints upon ourselves in our laws both written and unwritten that effectively govern our behavior in what is acceptable and what is not.

To insure that there is both continuity and the perpetuation of the species, to protect the greater good, often people finding themselves in the minority are trampled like so many weeds in a garden. Only those that we deem fit are cultivated, while others, in the minority, are weeded out through socially established concepts designed to eliminate or control the handful of deviants that appear in the public’s experience.

It would be good for others to consider “The Space Suit” relationship and better understand the similar ties that we all share because of our earth bound ship that revolves around the Sun.

:) :) :)

It's a good analogy. Here's one I read the other day about democracy and the greater good carried to extremes. We need to be more that two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

Interesting concept. Now when it comes to the idea that we are in the wrong space suit you are talking TS's not CD's. I as a crossdresser do not feel I was born in the wrong body just that the clothes that are made for the body I am in suck. I am sorry lets rephrase that. The clothes for the body I am in are a bit dull and lack a good range of color and paterns. I would be just as happy wearing a dress as a suit. Maybe happier as with a dress I do not have to wear a tie. I hate ties! If I wanted a noose around my neck I would tie one.

A little deep for me but I like the idea of my skin being a space suit.

Enjoy your space suit ladies.

Awhile back I ran across a Christian rock group called "Earthsuit". They kinda followed your line of thinking but from a spiritual perspective. I found it intriguing. :-k

Hi all,

Danielle, you shameless Dualist, you! :P

Although I understand your point, I can only accept the idea of our bodies being "Space Suits" (and, yes, I do recognize that it's merely an analogy) if I accept that my body is somehow "separate" from "me." I'm not sure I'm willing to commit to this idea. We too often think that what constitutes who we are is primarily our mind, or our personality, or our spirit or self, or what have you that's intangible. We forget that much of who we are is shaped by our relations with the Other (the "Other" being, of course, any human being with whom we interact) and that Other reacts to us (and we to him or to her) largely on the basis of appearance.

In this sense, and to slightly twist Gaven's suggestion that transsexuals are more often the recipients of inappropriate "Space Suits" than are crossdressers, I'd suggest that the real "Space Suit" is not the body nor the mind, but the person. It's a person--not just a body nor just a mind--that flaunts social conventions or gender roles. This idea is appealing to me because it harkens back to the ancient roots of the word "person"; to the Romans, it originally meant 'per sona' (literally, "sound through") and it referred to the masks actors wore during a play and was seen as a "front" through which a self could be in relation to others. (Significantly, back then, and even beyond Shakespeare"s time, male actors wore female masks... they "personified" women... something that, even today, is still mostly acceptable--as we all know too well--only in the entertainment industry. Think: RuPaul, Eddie Izzard, Dame Edna, Flip "Geraldine" Wilson, Milton Berle, Benny Hill, the Kids In The Hall, etc., etc.)

Now, what I'm really reminded of with all this talk of "Space Suits" is David Bowie's Major Tom or Robert Heinlein's Have Space Suit Will Travel. Classics, both.

Again, food for thought, Danielle. Thanks. 8)

Love,
CJ

Hi Girls:

I recently spoke with a small group at the University and was asked about this "Space Suit" theory that they had heard about from others. While it never was a very hot topic here apparently, I thought that I would make a new entry to bring it back into the lime light for the weekend.

Frankly, I have never considered my body as anything other than a means for my soul to get around. Soul meaning, the me that is inside. Everything else is just "dressing" on the cake so to speak. With all the little things that I notice about my physical self, I realize that in the end, it all stays here neatly packaged in some form of man-made container or in a handy portable urn, pick your poison before someone else has to do it for you. Too late to complain atfter that I suppose.

Your "Space Suit," a DNA driven biological entity that you show off for all to see, dressed in various items, designed to enhance your feelings about yourself!

Once you become aware, really aware of this, and the idea of just 100 years if you are lucky, things do not seem so bad after all. Just a point of view.

:) :) :)

Hugs
