Arthur C Clarke has died - aged 90

Post by Susan »

I know a lot of us love Science Fiction so I thought I would post this.

British science fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clarke has died in Sri Lanka at the age of 90.

Is he the last of the old guard?

Thank You Arthur

Yeah, I saw that. The man lived to see lots of really cool things, some of which he played with the concepts of. I think he was lucky in lots of ways though the effects of polio had greatly reduced his mobility. His genius will be missed.

I don't know off hand if he is the last of the old guard SF writers, but he is near the last if not. I always appreciated his mostly science based science fiction stories.

Love, Carolynn

A.C. Clarke died, huh? Damn shame. I spent many a fruitful hour reading his stories and novels. Like Asimov and a select few others, Clarke was a man of ideas and a brilliant expositor of all things scientific. Like that of many authors first published during the Golden Age of science-fiction, Clarke's prose was a little on the dry and brittle side, without much emotional meatiness but, man! what dizzying ideas and concepts! He made me want to fly, to soar, to plant my feet on alien shores.

He'll be sorely missed.

I used to devour his books. I always thought his short story, The Sentinel, was far better than it's offspring 2001. He influenced not only how we think but how many people write I think. I will miss him.

An end of an era. His writings have been an inspiration to me, along with such greats as carl sagan and Isaac Asimov. I once had the honor and pleasure of reviewing one of Clarke's books for Natural History Magazine.
