Hi all,

I suggested
Debate City... a place for the careful weighing of the reasons for or against something.

I did that because I believe that would be the appropriate way to discuss these issues.

If we are unable to discuss them in a manner that does not disrupt the rest of the forum, then I support Tornado Alley. And I also support it being a restricted area.

What is hot about a topic in and of itself? Is it not the responses that are disruptive?
Would calling it the area for hot topics simply make it easier for us to blame the topic as opposed to the way we respond?

The reason this area was created in the first place was because some of the posts were disruptive not the topics….No?

From reading your post, I can see that I expect the name to reflect the conflict that goes on there--in other words, I don't expect the discussions to become calmer and more reasoned if the name is less edgy. But I would love to be proved wrong about this!

A problem I have with "Hot Topics" is the same problem that we ran into with some other names--a misleading first impression. There's a sexual connotation to that name, for me. So I would still prefer a title that stresses "Debate."

A few items from today’s newspaper follow:

1. The Ford Mustang is considered to be a “hot” car.
2. Many view Jennifer Lopez as a “hot” entertainer.
3. North Korea’s plans for its first nuclear test are a “hot” news item.
4. Chipper Jones currently is in a “hot” batting streak.
5. There is a “hot” debate in the U.S. over Social Security.

I could go on and on, but the essential point is that “hot” most often means interesting, noteworthy, spirited, exceptional, or the like. Of course, sexual material might be any of these, but “hot” can hardly be said to imply sexual material. Most basically, it refers to a high temperature, but anything else that is intriguing or worthy of notice fits the definition as well.

Although “hot” does not imply sexual, I would nevertheless hope that discussions of crossdressing and sexuality would not be swept under the rug. For many CD’s and SO’s, this topic is among the more significant ones, as evidenced by the seminars at any gender conference.
