I have a Canon EOS 400D - its great for my particular interest. Astronomical images. It takes great terrestrial pictures too.

I am very happy with mine.

I can't say much that heasn't been said...for privacy..2 memory cards...though most can be formatted. 10 second timers are ok and standard..but try that in a bridal gown ...so remote timers are better..but rare
One thing not mentioned..is check the price of a memory card and spare battery for the cam you choose..Sony can be expensive eg. But you do need a spare battery. Keep it cheap..still better than poloroid pics:)

for MMC see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MultiMediaCard

fr SD see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card

Note that a digital camera has an internal memory also, which is not secure nor very large. So they use one of these type cards to store more images.

Accordingly, make sure any pictures you take get stored on the card and not in the camera's memory.

Hi Carol Ann:

I went to photog school at the Graduate School of Photography in Washington, D.C.; spent 30 + years in electronics manufacturing an Aerospace Technology. I would have told you just about everything that has been in this thread and I would have been wrong in your case.

You just want to take simple good pictures like my spouse. She won a door prize camera at last years Holiday party for the office/clinic. A simple but nifty camera, the Olympus FE-170, costs about $149.00. A simple 6mp camera with good internals ( sensor, chip and other basics to the electronics world.). You have several simple settings on the main dial on the back. Even a guide setting.

My spouse would take her old 35mm camera and Sony video camera on trips and take 5 pictures and 10 minutes, maybe, of video. No enthusiasm what so ever. With her new camera, well, every where I turn, S_N_A_P, there she was taking pictures.

She carries it in a small bag with her to work, ball games etc. She and her little camera in “AUTO” mode or “SHAKE” mode are inseparable. The camera plugs into a USB port for automatic upload to her computer picture folder on the desk top. You can hide this folder or you can put it onto a flash memory stick. No matter. Once you take your picture dear, someone, somehow, someday, is going to find it! Trust me!

It has a simple timer mode for self-portrait and a great macro mode so you can take pictures of a flower or bee close up, really close up…!

Simple, good results.

A simple trick that the pro’s use. Go to your kitchen and use a small tripod with your camera on one end of the table. You sit on the other end after activating the camera and using the timer mode. Walk to the other side, sit, fold your arms and smile. You can try with and without flash. To get flattering light, turn on the kitchen ceiling light and try that. You can use the fill-flash mode for more even light rather than full flash. You can chose the red-eye and fill-flash mode with the dial on the back.

My spouse figured things out in about 30 minutes. She is a true novice. I was there for moral support and later, advice on lighting etc.

You can email me if you get one and I will walk you through it’s use or we can talk via voice line at your leisure. LD for me is only $.05cents a minute….we can talk forever, ha ha LOL. I will have you clicking in a jiffy!

Oh yeah, it takes only 2 AA batteries. We use rechargeable but alkaline will work in a pinch for 100 pictures or so with fill flash. Camera uses an [XD Picture Card] and has built-in memory for about 10 pictures right out of the box. Simple erase procedure. Keep it simple….!

An XD picture card is thump sized and a 1GB card is $39.00. Holds 600 pictures at medium resolution size. Smaller cards like the 512mb card is $19.00. Holds about 300 same pictures. Simple. Comes with USB cable to download to a windows PC ( Win Millenium or better preferred - XP or Vista is best for ease of transfer. Camera at Wal-marts, Circuit City, Best Buy, BJ's, etc. With an XD card, you can take it to the store and get pictures professionally printed in an hour, but the tech will have to look at the pictures, you get my drift girlfriend. You also can use the Kodak machine there and do the print selection, edit, and printing yourself, one pic at a time. Pictures do not always reflect the image that we see in the mirror. I like to use a cheap copy of Adobe's PhotoDeluxe, it was $49.00 but may not be available under that name these days. I think they have a $99.00 program that replaces it now and is 100 times more capable than the older program.

Hi Carol Ann:

On another topic. Grandchildren. As you may know, I have three (3). They live 5 minutes from my house. They do not know about me but..... At this time, the oldest, my only grand-daughter is beginning to question the pictures in my office without coming out and saying it. She just hints about what she thinks she has seen and at age 11 she can now analyze and question rather well.

I keep a 4x6 centered on th PC screen of "me" but it is in a painting form, and was merged with another person. So my 2 1/2 yr old grandson walks into my office area and points at the picture, "Mommy." That is because the background couch and large pillows look like the one at his house. He smiles and wants to sit in my chair and look at his "Mommy's" picture several times when visiting over an 8 hour period. No question about whom it is to him. It's "Mommy."

I immagine that in another 6 months he is going to be asking whom the picture really is. But for now, it's "Mommy." If I printed it out, he would carry it around with him and show everyone. Hmmm. I think it is funny and cute but of course others would not.

Oh well. Grandchildren are rather resilient, so if they find out, well, properly explained it will be okay.

Hugs

Danielle Marie
