What advantage did she get? Where was the misconduct? I'm sure there were no requirements Stanton appear at the convention in a suit and tie.LARGO – The City Commission will ask Pinellas County Sheriff Jim Coats
to investigate whether any of the city's elected officials or
employees violated the city charter in the months leading up to the
firing of former City Manager Steve Stanton in March.
The commission was acting May 15 on a petition signed by some 200
residents who claimed Mayor Pat Gerard, Commissioner Gay Gentry and
several city department heads violated the charter in having kept
their knowledge of Stanton's sex change a secret.
The petition points to a city charter provision that requires any
elected officials or employees to report any suspicions of misconduct
in office to the city commission. They contend he appeared at a
convention as Susan Stanton, used city employees to plan his "outing"
and spent city money for his personal advantage.

In the world of LAW, one that can rightfully expect privacy ( no hidden cameras in the bathroom stall), is typically accepted.
So too, one that holds a civil position, (government, paid for by taxes levied), can be expected to present an image that is “expected.” That word, “expected,” can be rather tricky. But, for the most part, “majority rules,” and so expected in this case would be that of the “male” persuasion such that Susan (Steve) Stanton, at the time of the event, was presenting a “male” image as was “expected” in all other aspects of executing the job title.
The LAW, is based at times on complicated if not difficult interpretations which are derived from “English Law” (the exception in the USA is Louisiana and their reference to French Law), while for the most part, cannot simply be in plain black and white.
This can be a good thing if it is YOU that is going to trial and YOU are looking for a way out. Just depends on which foot the shoe is placed. Stanton felt safe at a convention to present a image that was not in compliance with the job function as “expected” from all previous presentations.
Stanton should never have opted for the “Susan” presentation when representing the job title of “City Manager.” Private life and business life merge at times and the best thing to do when in doubt, consider it business and respect the guidelines. It may be a hard pill to swallow, but, you would expect the same of me or your best friend if the situation called for such a decision.
When we permit our own involvement, ego and personal preferences to cloud our judgment, it is not unusual for matters such as this particular instance to occur. Frankly, the citizens of Largo had a right to “expect” and get what they thought they were getting, a male City Manager as hired in situ.
Unfortunately, penis and vagina are still the medical establishments means to determine male and female of the species. Of course, a uterus is helpful as well for a final determination of the female. It still does not take into account the variations that occur on occasion in our reproductive cycle. That is what I think sums up the current debate for many about just how to go about this determination fairly rather than just for the majority that can pass the test.

Danielle,
You raise an interesting point, one which - Gawd! I hope I don't get taken to the woodshed for, but if I do, so be it!!!
Anyway, you mention various body parts and how they are presented and in/with whom! That brings me to a question - How does one categorize a woman who can not bear children? Males can not bear children, does that make her a male even though she has "female plumbing?" A court rules that a rapist has the choice of going to jail for a long time or being castrated. He chooses castration, does that change his sex to the/a third sex? Is it all based on the "plumbing" you were born with whether or not it functions as it is suppose to? If that is the case, why would not the brain that "we" were born with also serve as a basis for determination of which gender we are to adhere to?
The mind boggles?
Should I quote Shakespeare?? Why not! "The first thing we do is kill all the lawyers!"
Love ya,
Virginia

Hi Virginia:
Actually, your DNA gives you away. That's right! Today, with sophisticated testing, male and female can be readily determined. Of course, there two is the specific "bone" structure. But, if the bones are scattered, leaving one or two fragments, DNA testing can make a 99% determination.
So, disregarding all "soft organs" and their functions, including mammary glands, etc, DNA testing is now used to help a Doctor make the "confusing birth's not so confusing on a DNA level. Still, this does not take into account a TG child. The mental state is not so easily determined until age 5 or so. Then, it is more of a observe, see and wait game in medical science.
Good, bad, or indifferent, this is why those in the field of psychology feel that there in the future may be a means to get to that part of the brain that controls this TG function. The flip side, it is strongly believed that several aspects are in play and that this may well prevent any specific pharmacological answer.
Consider that we would rather try to get the brain to change it's mind than to have to do physical surgery to our anatomy to make things right for many of the TS persuasion.
We can successfully alter your mood, but not how you believe. That is going to be far down the road if ever. And of course only for those that desire to make such a mental change. I think that there are too many balls in the air for humanity to juggle.
Removing a penis does not negate the fact that the individual is by birth, male. A woman that cannot have children is still female by DNA definition. Each person has a DNA marker that is specific to neing male or female. Regardless of how you feel. Thus, TG m-t-f have the appropriate bone structure that reflects this biological marker.
Chip away as the cosmetic surgeons may, unfortunate or not, the die is cast in the first 24 hours of your development. I am comfortable with this. It does not make me any less female to my way of thinking. I just have a different standard that I use for the comparison. I too cannot give birth, I can inseminate, but not give birth.
This does not change my psychological makeup. So, for sake of medicine and law and order, we have adopted a physical standard for points of reference. In the near future this public debate will be settled as the legal system accepts the DNA "marker" as specific evidence disregarding all other soft tissue factors and reproductive factors.

Yet there are many individuals who are intersexed. There are different conditions related to being intersexed, one being CAIS (complete androgen insensitivity syndrome). These individuals look completely like females at birth, and grow into normal looking women. Many do not know they are intersexed. Yet their DNA is XY.
So, no, DNA's not a good marker anymore, which is why the Olympic Committee stop using DNA as a test for male/female.

Hi Donna:
The DNA markers that the Olympic Committee were using came from a study in 1993. Since then, there has been a quantum leap in DNA testing and as recent as 2005, new markers were established and compared to a National Database, (Prison population and Nursing Schools), to test these markers which came out at 99% accurate.
Yes, there are those that fall into the category of “The Snail Darter.” With a population of around 300,000,000 million, the USA is very diverse but not so much that we can get down to the minute numbers of genetic differences that befit those that rarely, (less than .0001) percent of the population represent.
Throw out the baby with the bath water!
Think of it this way. If you have a small pimple on your butt, no one else will see it but you may get very uncomfortable for a period of time until said pimple is gone. Mean while, you avoid taking care of all your other skin area while you concentrate on that little pimple because it has your attention.
We simply cannot afford to make that mistake for a handful of people that are an exception. It may sound terrible but, if we concentrate on the 10,000 or so that fit a different description, we lose sight of the millions that do not. Take your eye off the ball and you will strike out and no one wins.
Hugs

Thank you ladies, as always, your information is priceless!!!
A novel that we are all familiar with: "These were the best of times, these were the worst of times!"
This is my "Magical Mystery Tour!" I will not be dissuaded from it, threatened, propositioned, altered. This lady will continue on. I guess sometimes, being a pioneer has its advantages. I can set my own rules as to what to wear, where to go, who to see, how to act.
It will probably not be as much "fun" once we are accepted into mainstream society (like the gays and lesbians). Society WILL set boundaries and rules for us like it does for everyone else. We, like those who may choose not to follow acceptable patterns of socialization, will be ostracized, but that has always been the situation with those that are "outside the acceptable norms!"
Things like changing our "sex" on our Driver's license or passport. Having credit cards issued using male-based social security numbers with a female name. Other things that NOTS or crossdressers may want to do will be up to the will of law and society.
I like how things are going for me right now. What if a law were passed that in order to be "recognized" as a NOTS or crossdresser, that you must dress and present in public, oh say 75% of the time in order to have recognition under the law, to be protected from discrimination. Well, it could happen. Of course, under "Sharia Law" if the Muslims take over it will be moot because they will have all of us "fed to the lions."
For this girl, today, "is the best of times" and I intend to take full advantage of it!!!
Go Forth Woman -- and BE!!!!

Late breaking news from Sarasota:
In today's paper, our local columnist found a good reason for the City Commissioners to turn down Susan Stanton's application for City Manager. As a woman, she would be spending too much of her valuable time in putting on makeup, doing her hair, getting dressed, and other girly things. This would take away time she should be spending on her job.
I wonder how Nancy Pelosi manages to keep her job. How about Margaret Thatcher, to say nothing of Hilary Clinton?
At first I thought this guy was being facetious - but the idiot really meant it!!

Lydia

Hi Lydia:
A reporter remarked that Sarasota as a place to vacation, could use some uplifiting style. "Stanton could provide a much needed face lift for the otherwise, staid, Sarasota."
Not having visited the area, I will of course rely on your input as to the validity of this statement Lydia. It does seem reasonable that "City Hall" for a time anyway, would be a place to visit on the tourist tour. One could muck about with all the visiting press, as they wait to catch Susan with a wrinkle in her stocking. Oooooo..ahahahahah... look at that, another wrinkle...
...
If Susan gets the position, it might be fun to move there close to the action. Perhaps, I could snag a litle "lunch time" - "quality time" with Susan and even have a little polical savy rub off on this girlfriend. What do you think girls? Me and the Paparazzi, flash, flash, click and flash..!
I would be a star too! Tada! And heeeeeere is Danielle Marie!

As for Susan Stanton's potential contribution, I think that a large proportion of our population would welcome her. However, we have our vocal minority of bigots and sanctimonious zealots. I hate to look forward to the time when her application is opened to public comments. I think she is strong enough to take the storm, but I am not that sure of our city commissioners.

Hey Lydia,
Did not see you mention (spelling) Armada Key or Long Boat Key?
Bet you are one of those Long Boat Key residents and have so much money you can't spend it all! :lol
I have eaten at several nice restaurants along there and it sure is a nice place to visit and I love those expensive shops, just wish I had the $$$$$$'s like some people I know to live there. Just curious, is the nudist beach still there??
Love ya,
Virginia

Hi Virginia,
The shops on St. Armand's Key (correct spelling) are still there -and as expensive as ever. Long Boat Key is now a separate city, so it will have no effect on the Stanton evaluation.
There are many excellent restaurants in Sarasota - not too expensive either. The city is growing fast - both vertically and horizontally. Bought my condo here 10 years ago, and if I had to buy it now, I couldn't afford it. This in spite of the housing depression. Culturally, this is a great place to live, however.
Above was NOT paid for by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.
BTW, today's column was far more rational - maybe the guy WAS kidding.
Hugs,
Lydia

Hi Girls:
Call me crazy, but, things are happening at ground zero in this ant mound. I went up to see what all the ruckus was about. Fellow ants running everywhere. I thought that we were being invaded or that some dumb human stepped on the mound vents again.
But no, I tell you, it is because of all the humans that are “coming out” as transgendered/transsexual etc. You know, the “different ones.” What a calamity of sensational exposure! People are talking everywhere about these sudden break-outs in personality type.
There have been others in the sports writing world before, I read that this morning. It makes one want to “put on her lipstick and go to town!” I thought of getting a digital picture of the President (Bush), and dress him up for the internet, but, then, the Secret Service would take away my digital crayons and lock me up, ha ha LOL. Oh my, that darn “cat nip again.”

Danielle,
I think you may be right!
As of late, the amount of publicity that is hitting the news about "us!" The Susan Stanton, the "girl" running for prom queen, the sports guy going to transition, some of the articles in the news paper, i.e., the Chicago Tribune' lengthy article. Some of the recent scientific research, how "we" may come to be. Sean Hannity, the Conservative wacko has an ad about how to get out of legal prosecution. Something about lose some weight, get your figure in shape and put on a dress before you go to court - that there is a double standard in our courts!
I certainly enjoy reading about our sisters who go out shopping and are treated as they want or should be and how somewhat surprised they seem to be.
We are getting there - slowly, but here we come!!!
Love,
Virginia
