idea for a new thread
I thought I'd put this out there and see if anyone likes this idea.
I enjoy the whole getting to know who someone is here. Not just in the our beginnings but in other things. Like where you grew up, your family, profession, military service, all the trivia that makes up our life and contributes to who we are. The sort of thing that is admirably summed up in the picture of Jeannie with her kids decades ago.
Any thoughts on a section for our biographies? It would include things having to do with our awakenings of CDing and gender questions but also anything else we think relevant.

Hi all,
Absaroka,
I think that's a great idea. However, that kind of thread could lead to a member unwittingly (or, perhaps, wittingly) damaging his or her privacy. The internet can be a creepy place (or, more literally, a place full of creeps). Maybe if we did it in a protected area of the forum, accessible to forum members only? Whaddy'all think about Absaroka's suggestion?

I agree with CJ, I think our IT Manager Ms. Caith could possibly come up with some type of security that could make a lot of us more comfortable with posting some of this information.
I will have to say now that you will not learn things about Virginia as there are things that, well, you would not believe, things that may scare you, hell things that I have trouble believing.
Anyway, for those that would be secure enough in themselves to share a lot of "intersanctum" things I think it would be a great idea.
There are some things about, well, I won't mention any names but some things about a few of my girlfriends, I would like to know but am afraid to ask!
Sorry, I got off from work early today and just have too much time on my hands!
Love you all,
Virginia

Basically, I think the idea is a good one, however - a big however.
The aspect of security needs to be strongly considered. I know that some of us here have laid our souls bare. That takes courage and a heavy reliance on the integrity of the forum members. I hope that reliance is justified, but there is no guarantee.
Privacy is very important to us, especially those of us who are even partially closetted. No matter how secure the communication, there is always a possibility of it being penetrated, or innocently revealed.
If such a thread is started, contributors should be clearly warned about what they post.
Hugs,
Lydia

idea for a new thread
Sounds ok to me, but I'd prefer it to be open to registered members only. I'm so comfortable saying what I say at times with this forum, because it's a controlled environment here, but I think if people were going to disclose more intimate details about their past and themselves, then it best that control to tightened somewhat to a restricted environment. Having said that, I never have any objections to anyone contacting me as long as their intentions are honourable, it's always nice to interact and have exchanges with others, but nobody wants to have their space invaded by those whose intentions are less than honourable.
Kind Regards,
Sally.

Hi, all -
Trust me, if we ever do open a section of the Forum such as Absaroka asks, then:
(1) it will only be for registered members; and
(2) it would also be a hidden user group . . . meaning that it's only accessible to those members admitted to that particular group, and members must be logged in to read any of the posts.
I'm also thinking that members to that proposed user group must meet other criteria, such as meeting a certain minimum length of time here and must also be an actively posting member.
That being said, how many others would be interested in this idea?

I belonged to another forum for quite a while where we did this. It was also a venue where anonymity was heavily guarded. Most of the people there had no trouble at all telling their life story without revealing anything about themselves that would actually identify them. They were in reality far more discrete than we are in that no pictures were allowed, period. Since it would be the member themselves writing the biography they would have total control in terms of keeping things out of their biography-if you don't want something known don't say it.
I would agree that only registered members, maybe even only people who have been members for a certain amount of time, should be writing this. In the other forum the entire bio was also approved by the moderators before it was made public. They didn't object to anything in mine.
Anyone wanting to see the bios can go to e-aa.org and then click on our stories.

A very ineresting thought. One could either post or not depending on the individual's confidence level. The security issues mentioned, of course, are a concern, but I have confidence in our Forum's leadership

An open book.
Hi ladies
I don't it's possible to protect anything on any site. They have caught 16 year old kids hacking into Defense Department computers. You just have to figure the internet is like a big filing cabinet with a crappy lock.
If you don't want some pictures or other personal information seen don't put them on the internet. That's like leaving your house unlocked here in Waterbury. You might as well put up a big neon sign saying"Steal my stuff"
Personally, I don't care what people do with my pictures and rantings. My life is ruined as it is so blackmail is not an option. Hugs ladies.
Love
Jeannie
