This weekend I took the basic motorcycle rider safety course and amazingly I passed! I'm telling you I have a new respect for motorcycle riders now. I had never ridden, except as a passenger, and it looked fairly straightforward but its not, at least at the beginning. All the clutch hand, gear foot, hand brake, foot brake, head turn, don't run over the instructor! Oh, I went home the first day feeling like ground meat. But I left Sunday with new confidence (after one key word of advice from the instructor - remember to breathe!) and my certificate.

Now I can get my scooter to ride the streets of San Francisco and not be a menace to myself and others. I am supremely grateful to the guy at Scuderia who gave me the brochure and told me to take the course BEFORE buying the scoot.

Congrats on your not being a menace to others. Oh, and congrats on your being an official hog rider... well, on your being a piglet rider, anyway.

Roxanne and I are seriously considering "scootering" ourselves up, too. Let me know what it's like, eh? (Her colleagues have almost managed to talk her out of it... "too dangerous," "can't ride on the freeways," "can only use it in the summer or in fair weather," etc., etc. What a bunch of party poopers.)

I'm glad you can scoot around SF now... wind in your hair... sun on your back... uh, kids in your pocket. There's freedom to be had in those little beasts (scooters, I mean, not the kids).

My wife asked me if I wanted a two wheeler, i.e., a Segway. I'd love one, but the price is high and I'd never get any walking exercise .

As someone who has been riding a LONG time, congrats on passing the class. It's not easy and not only makes you safer on two wheels the class makes you a better car driver also (I wish everyone was required to take it)

Go Terri! A scooter is a great way to ride (and park) in San Francisco. If I had one, I'd love to ride it in the city, but alas, they don't allow scooters on that Big Bridge that separates us. [The new east side of the Bay bridge will have a bike path, but the west side will not. Guess they figured they didn't want Oakland riff-raff getting past Treasure Island.]

I think I'd have to skip some of the crosstown routes, like Divisadero or Scott, though. Man, those hills! I'd ride over to Van ness, until I got WAY better at navigating streets like those. Still, I'd like to try it. I had to make a decision when I was 15, as to where to spend my savings. A new trumpet--or a Honda 50? The trumpet won out, and I never did end up getting any kind of bike.
