I think Hemingway was.
Billy Tipton lived her life as a non surgical male. Even got married. Her husband was astonished at what the corpse did and didn't have after she died. How's that for keeping marital secrets?

Eddie Izzard, Actors, Jack Lemon (some like it hot), Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie), but I really am not sure they would be considered CDs since their short sojurns were for movies and they had pro makeup artists doing their conversions.
Other than celebs dressing for entertainment, I can't think of any that are well known. There are a number of web sites with cds, but I don't know of any that have fame outside the web.
There are quite a few TSs that have distinction, but not many CDs. Possibly due to the secretive nature of CDing?
Then there are lots of drag artists that have some fame, and pagent winners. But only within that circle.

Should we make a distinction between actors who maybe just did this as part of their work, (Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie) vs folks who liked to CD for their own personal reasons like J Edgar?

Nobody's mentioned the source of my favorite quote: Ru Paul, who said "It's easy for people to label and categorize other people; in this way they make them small, trite, and ultimately inhuman."
