While reading many of our members comments I have noticed that the spelling in many items is basically disastrous, and would like to encourage contributors to take a little more care in writing their items and using spell check before they submit an item.

Thank you for your suggestion! CJ and I have previously addressed this issue, but apparently not many people read the notices, or they are just not aware how bad their spelling really is, both of which are very real possibilities. Of course, there are also many words that sound the same but are spelled differently, depending upon its intended meaning (ex: to, too, two; there, their, they're; and the like), and spell check will not correct that . . . one would also need a grammar check program.

Most browsers have a spell check feature available at no extra charge. I am a spelling bee champion, yet I always use spell check 'just in case' my fingers couldn't keep up with my thoughts!

We do have a few people from Jolly old England, and there are differences in how words are spelled between our two countrys, and a spell checker with an US dictionary may have words that are spelled differently to the one available in England. The same applies to Canada. So if you see a few words with different letters, like gray and grey, then don't get upset.

Likewise, there are words that are spelled correctly that will not be caught by the spell check not correct (nor intended) in context. Out, our, the (when you meant they or then which is one of my bugaboos), then, thin are a few examples. It is pretty easy to see the context and overlook those when you encounter them. Remember that people are dashing off responses to posts, not writing an English composition for a grade.

Yes there are a few examples of posts that are hard to read due to misspellings, and if I am in a hurry I will tend to just skip them. No big deal.

I'd like to add that punctuation and grammar help a lot. Also if every few sentences are separated by a space (hit enter a couple of times) it helps a lot for old eyes like mine.

I figure if you are literate enough to use a computer you are literate enough to read other peoples posts and learn how to write readably from that.

Well I have double the trouble. Being born in England and living here for 10 years my brain types in American English but my fingers still type in the Queens English...oh I'm so confused.

I use the google toolbar which has an optional spell check that checks as you type.

I'm not that bothered by misspellings in posts as long as the context is clear.

If someone writes hear instead of here, for example, the post is still understandable.

Run-on sentences and long paragraphs are my bane.

Hey. I'm an engineer.. Bad spelling is required. Lucky my Blackberry has a spell checker... Wish I remembered to use it more often!

Did not know about the spell check, will try to do better.

I use the spell check in Firefox and that seems pretty decent.

In addition, my school English teachers in the late 50's/early 60's would be described today as grammar and spelling nazis.

Most of what I was taught has stayed with me.

Oh come on now we are not all English Professors or spelling bee champs,
wow if you think some of our post are missed spelled drop into chat one time and let your brain try to figure out what someone is spelling now and again but nobody complains as we figure it out and have a special language of our own.

Working hard to write my post in a more legible manner, using my new found spell check. Chat room is different, can't type that fast and read at the same time, much less use this old computer with its junk in trunk keyboard.

We don't expect everyone to be a good or even a champion speller, but it would be nice if posts were put through a spell check program before being submitted as a matter of common courtesy . . . especially those where the spelling is absolutely atrocious. I can understand the bad spelling in chat, it's a fast-paced environment and even I have a difficult time keeping up with the conversation at times.

Some posts with bad spelling is easy to handle, especially when it's only a few words; the context of the post is usually still understandable. However, I do know where Pat is coming from because some posts are chock-full of bad spelling, and reading those posts is mentally very tiring.

Absaroka mentioned paragraphs not separated by a space (hard return/enter being utilized twice after the last sentence) and Donna mentions long paragraphs and run-on sentences . . . yeah, those are my 'pet peeves' as well and sometimes even more so than bad spelling.
