Been a rough night and here I am up at 2:30 in the morning. Caught a special on CNN about Linda Ronstadt whose music I always enjoyed but watching it I grew even a deeper appreciation for her. The power of her voice, the range she had not only in her voice but also in the songs she did, and the power she had in a male dominated industry.

Got me to thinking about the other women of Rock and Roll. A lot of them come to mind such as Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane. Her powerful voice so beautifully demonstrated in White Rabbit.

There's a couple of my favorites what about yours? Who is your favorite lady of Rock and why?

Bonnie Raitt. She came to maturity with her Nick of Time record after a tough period. Plays fine guitar, picks great tunes, some of which resonate so deeply with me.

Deborah Harry. She had a trashy sexiness to her, so appropriate for the time.

I can think of many...and will not mention those who would really date me. Hum... Yeah Debbie Harry...Annie Lennox...Madonna... from the 80s...But in country Mary Chapin Carpenter...gaw there are many female country artists...Alison Krauss when you say nothing at all... but the list can expand greatly depending on the genre...and the era...

Two come to mind right away.

First off Janis Joplin! What can I say here that hasn't already be said about her? From touching ballads like "Me and Bobbie McGee" to all out rock standards like to "Down on Me" she did it all.

Secondly the Wilson sisters Ann and Nancy better known as Heart. When rock was dominated by men they burst on the scene and showed them the girls had just as much if not more than the guys did. Nancy Wilson on the guitar in "Crazy on You" still sends shivers up and down my spine.

Maybe a bit more recent than some of the ones here but going toad two, well two girl groups. The Go Go's and The Bangles.

Both showed girls could bring it just as well as any guy groups of their time

Lot of good ones here girls. Going to add a couple though maybe more folk than actually rock and in a way one cannot think of one of them without thinking of the other, Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins.

Joni Mitchell has written so many beautiful and thought provoking songs but the one that still stands out to me is "Big Yellow Taxi." Years ahead of its time and tried to warn us.

Judy Collins had one of the most unique and beautiful voices of her generation or any for that matter. Her renditions of classics such as "Both Sides Now" and "Turn, Turn, Turn" made them come to life. A little side note here on Judy Collins some of you may not know is she was the inspiration for the Crosby, Stills, and Nash classic "Suite Judy Blue Eyes."
