WHO'S BILLY BIGOT ? ,
I think we've all met him , that guy that hates gays , girlie men, hippys , punks and anyone else that doesn't conform to stereotypical masculinity.
Billy Bigot could be found anywhere but for some reason he tends to reside on the outer perimeter of this cities suburban area , its interesting watching the variety of different people in Melbournes inner suburbs " eg Fitzroy " with way out clothing , bright coloured hair and jewelry etc .
Then we take a peek at life in the outer suburbs , " eg Diamond Creek " , try walking into the local hotel with a girlie haircut as I did some years back , luckily I was with many male friends but the many evil stares I recieved stopped me from ever going back.
since then I have noted a large intollerance level from people who live on the fringe areas of this town compared to accepance in the inner .

Merinda,
Interesting, I believe there are similar places in the USA.

No offence intended to Billy our new member here,
The name Billy Bigot was derived from " Billy Baggot " a character who was a bigoted old man in a long since dead soap opera.

Hi Merinda,
Where I live, the area is prowled by gangs of teenagers, and the parents don't seem to care what trouble they get into. I think I'm not living in a very condusive place for CDing
Many years ago I lived in a much larger town with a university. The students came from all over ( I was one myself ) and with their flambouyance, they gave the town an air of the cosmopolitan. No such thing where I live now though
I don't doubt that for a second that if I went out dressed and was read, our windows would be put out within a day, and we would be told to leave the area or die
Love

Hi Rebecca ,
If I went out into my neighbourhood and was read I would create nothing more than gossip.
Ausies are a tollerant lot generally but there are places that you steer clear of , pubs full of drunk cowboys is one, and those sort of pubs exist on the outer fringes of suburbia and in some country towns.

Hi ladies, When I lived in NYC, I constantly ran into the Billy Bigots. And that was in the city not the suburbs. Mostly it was packs of skinhead types or disco dannies from Brooklyn. They were always messing with me, Whether I was in drag, goth or punk style. They are everywhere. Sometimes it's just better to stay home and read a book. It really gets you down sometimes.

in the cotrner of england I live in, going out dressed up is not an option.. at least unless you have a death wish.the whole town is infested with chavs who arent capable of understanding anything other than beer, women with big breasts, eating kebabs and saying stupid words like 'phat'. How I'd love to live in a commune inhabited only by cd's and those who understand and love us...

That's terrible "goth". I always thought any where in England was OK. I know of Yobs, from what I read but I didn't think it was as bod as that. Sorry

Hi there,
Wow. Very insightful thread.
When I go out I don't have to worry about people looking at me funny or anything. I don't really look feminine when I'm not dressed, but it would really bite to be heckled or anything. That would stink dressed or not dressed.
I think you're right. It is better to read a book sometimes.
I've been stressing safety out there a lot lately. I hope we can continue to enjoy ourselves, but be smart and safe about where you travel.

YEOWW! thats scary,
Its reasonably safe here in Australia in the main cities , I've seen CDs walk around the shops here with no problem and that includes myself.
If anything you'd be more likely to be teased than hurt , but I wouldn't go out feeling too complacent .

It's always the Billy Bigot types who always have the most skeletons in their closets...
Remember the movie American Beauty?

Great thread Girls,
This is something everyone should be aware of, whether they are going out dressed or not.
