Who is Sebastion ? A strange question, I know, but I think I'm more likely to find the answer here rather than anywhere else.

For some reason the name has been in my head for years, the only references I can remember are as follows.......

The children's TV programme called Belle and Sebastion

The disturbing film where Dirk Bogarde plays a gay man hung up on a young boy.

Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel song called Sebastion in 1973 ish

Hi Darlene,

Sorry about the vagueness, it's just that it's really vague to me. I'm not even sure how to describe it, it's like a feeling that has been with me always. I was wondering if anybody else had any references to the name. The more I explore my past, the more little bits filter through, this being one of them. I know it has a connection with my femme side (hence posting it here) but I have no real idea why. It's like a name that has haunted me since I was 5, but not in a bad way.

Sometimes I talk on the forum of a 'lilting' feeling, a song in a minor key rather than major etc, it belongs in that territory, I half expected someone to say Sebastion is the patron saint of cross-dressers.

The Steve harley song has the right feel but why the name Sebastion.
The lyrics go like this.....

Radiate simply, the candle is burning so low for me
Generate me limply, I can't seem to place your name, Cherie
To rearrange all these thoughts in a moment is suicide
Come to a strange place, We'll talk over old times we never spied

Somebody called me Sebastion
Somebody called me Sebastion

Work out a rhyme, Toss me the time, Lay me, your'e mine
And we all know. Oh yeah

Your'e persian eyes sparkle, you lips ruby blue, don't speak a sound
You, Oh so gay, with Perisian demands, you can run around
And your view of society, screws up my mind like you'll never know
Lead me away, come inside, see my mind in Kaleidoscope

Somebody called me Sebastion
Somebody called me Sebastion

Love me sublime, mangle my mind, do it in style
So we all know. Oh yeah

Your'e not gonna' run babe, wev'e only just begun babe, to compromise
Slagged in a bowery saloon, love's a story we'll serialise
Pale angel face, green eye shadow, the glitter is outasite
No courtesan, could begin to decipher your'e beam of light

Somebody called me Sebastion
Somebody called me Sebastion

Dance on my heart, laugh swoop and dart, La-di-di-da
Now we all know you Yeah

As I say, sorry for the confusing post
Love

Hi all,

Right, I'm back, and armed with coffee.

Tracy,

I know my question came over a bit confusing, probably because it came from the heart. Ever since I was young whenever I came across the name Sebastion, it was always seemed to be in reference to gender etc.

I did a bit of searching on the net and it turns out I know zilch about religious martyrs.

I typed in Saint Sebastion, and while I couldn't find a straight answer in black and white (now that doesn't surprise me) I did find all sorts of references.

Turns out St Sebastion is used as a gay icon, was martyred (and survived ?) by arrows because of love, androgeny etc all seem to come into it and even Narcissus. There have been films, plays, music, art with reference to Sebastion. I think the lyrics above reference a french play about decadence. (I think)

So, it seems that the 'word' Sebastion has come to mean something not black and white in the gender world etc.

This is all very vague to me, just what I gather from half an hour searching, I know there are girls here that will have a vastly superior knowledge on this than I have.

It just amazes me that ever since I was very young I reacted to the name.

Hope this helps
Love

Howdy Rebecca,

This is what I was able to scrounge up on Saint Sebastion. If you go to the site below, there are many links to check out.

SEBASTIAN

Memorial
20 January
Profile
Son of a wealthy Roman family. Educated in Milan. Officer of the Imperial Roman army, and captain of the guard. Favorite of Diocletian. During Diocletian's persecution of the Christians, Sebastian visited them in prison, bringing supplies and comfort. Reported to have healed the wife of a brother soldier by making the Sign of the Cross over her. Converted soldiers and a governor.

Charged as a Christian, Sebastian was tied to a tree, shot with arrows, and left for dead. He survived, recovered, and returned to preach to Diocletian. The emperor then had him beaten to death.

During the 14th century, the random nature of infection with the Black Death caused people to liken the plague to their villages being shot by an army of nature's archers. In desparation they prayed for the intercession of a saint associated with archers, and Saint Sebastian became associated with the plague.

This probably is not what your thinking, but there was a movie called (I Think) Adventures of Sebastion Cole. About a troubled teenager who's gaurdian was a transexual. It is a fairly recent movie so I don't think this is what's on your mind. Ijust thought there might be a link.

Hi girls,

Anelie.

Interesting point. Iv'e never seen the film, though it certainly sounds as though the name has been chosen for this reason. I think my early memories of the name go back to te 60s.

I'll keep on thinking about this, my deepest taste in music also goes way back too. What I call the european sound.
