The most beautiful man is 500 years old!

Hi all,

Catchy topic title, eh? :P

Of course, I'm referring to Michelangelo's David (of "David and Goliath" fame). The statue was unveiled half a millenium ago this week. The Italians are celebrating its birthday with pomp and circumstance. To think that anyone gazing upon it today is also gazing upon something that came into being shortly after Columbus first spotted these wild shores of ours! Now that puts things in perspective!

The masterpiece has, throughout the ages, been hailed as one of the most beautiful depictions of the male form. Being slightly more enamored of the female form myself, I'd still agree. In its proportions, its flawless symmetry, its nobility, and in its incredibly well-rounded and soft beauty, Michelangelo's David is the very epitome of a work of art--a testament not only to one man's creative genius but to our very human need to see what the world looks like with us in it.

May David live another thousand years.

Love,
CJ

P.S.
In other art news, Edvard Munch's famous painting, The Scream, was stolen last week. In broad daylight, no less! Now there's something apt to produce anxiety, no?

when I saw the title of the thread, I thought it was about Keith Richards.

..rofl.. ..rofl..

Yes! (Although I hear they've got Dick Clark waiting in the wings just in case Mr. Richards doesn't make it to age 500! :P )

Carolynn,

The painting (along with Madonna, another work by the same artist) was stolen from the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, on August 22nd. The thieves just walked in, held staff at gunpoint, pulled the paintings off the wall, and left. In a hurry. The two pieces are worth about $19,000,000.

I swear that David doesn't look a day over 300... he must work out!

On a serious note though, I have always liked Michaelangelo's work. :)

Hi CJ!!!! :)

Yeah, how could I forget a museum with a name like that!! :)
Nineteen Mil, huh. As famous as the paintings are, it sounds like the theives are wanting the insurance company to buy them back for a profitable price, though substantially less than their value. Russian Mafia or Al Qeda, do you suppose? Well, would make a neat book or movie any-hoo!

Later.

Hi girls,

I always found it comforting to know David was modestly endowed. It allowed me to feel good about my own endowment. I have used it in self defense many times. LOL.

Just shows how good art can really affect you life.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Me and Ed are off to Italy (staying near Florence) on our belated honeymoon the end of October, so will, of course, be paying a visit to the Galleria dell'Accademia to see David! He has had a birthday bath, too so he will be looking his best!
