The Ethel Merman Experience opens for the Tubes!

Hi All--
This Sunday my band will be opening for the Tubes at the Castro Street Fair in SF. For those of you within an easy drive of here, it'll be quite a day! We'll go on at 2pm, main stage at Castro and Market, and we'll be doing classic Hard rock from all eras, with "Ethel" doing her Broadway diva interpretation of such as Led Zep, Nirvana, and the White Stripes. The Tubes go on at 3. Nationally, they haven't been on the radar much since their biggest hits in '83, but in their hometown they'll draw a huge crowd.

And Jadeanne, what will I be wearing? A black floral-print thin-strap dress that I had altered to hit mid-thigh. I'll have a gold belt to keep the belly honest. Then some beige hose, with fishnets over that--I finally gave in to wearing them. My first try at wearing 3 1/2" black heels; I've worn 2" before this. Top it off with the long black wig, and maybe my silver silk shirt to start off. I'm ready to go!

Since this is San Francisco, we're going to open with the 60's version of "White Rabbit;" then we're going to pound into a more metallic version of the same song to get things going.

The website is www.castrostreetfair.org. Last year you could work your way around to the backstage "corral" to say hello through the fence. Don't know whether it'll be that relaxed this year, :-k but you can give it a try.

Anita,

That is so cool. I didn't even know The Tubes were still around. Sounds like a good time.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Hi all,

Anita,

I wish both you and the Ethel Merman gang some easy sailing on Castro come this Sunday! 8) It sounds like it'll be a blast. (Just make sure you don't plan on "covering" White Punks On Dope!) :P

Love,
CJ

I sorry Anita. Even if I left now (driving I do not like to fly these days) I would not be able to make it. But you go I always like to support all bands of people I know.

Jessie

Here is a @->->- for you anyway.

Anita,

I'm sorry that I won't be able to make from Buffalo for the concert, but thanks for the fashion report - with you wearing such a cool outfit, will Ethel be jealous :) ?

I remember the Tubes doing an autograph session in a Buffalo mall in the mid/late 70s.

We all hope you can get a few pics to post.

Thanks, gals, for all the encouragement!

I'm putting some last-minute costume pieces in place. Couldn't find the sparkly fishnets down at Macy's, (where I'd gotten them before), and it was too late to go to Nordstrom's.

This will be the second time we've played my original T-girl song, "Bombjam." It's the story of Lea, a T-girl who's out clubbing, and Billy, the guy she runs into. I'm getting a lot of good feedback on this one, and my CD with it is almost finished. After 34 years, it's high time we had an update of Lola and Holly~! :)

Beauty, I'm not quite sure whether I'm answering your question. here. This is a yearly benefit event, and is run by people close to us. So we donate our time for this one, and in return get good publicity and good will. The Tubes are also donating their time; all they asked for were plane tickets for singer Fee Waybill to come up from LA. One of the original organizers of the fair just died this year, and he was a friend of the Tubes. So their participation is a sort of memorial to him.

It went OK. It was sure fun to watch the Tubes, and they put on a fine show. I got to see Fee Waybill do "Quaa lude" again, after 30 years. (There's at least two generations who don't know what a Qaalude was.)

Our set? The crowd loved it, and our friends thought it was great. I was having enough technical difficulties that it never really broke through to fun for me--I was having to work too hard. Toward the end of the set the cold was really getting to my hands, too. The short dress was WAY too short, but oh, well. I forgot that the stage is really high there.

We have another gig on Friday, and that one will be with my own equipment, on a beautiful indoor stage. So I can have fun there--it'll be a relaxed show.

I was just about to ask if you had an album we could listen to. It sounds like you have an interesting sound.
