Anyone know the reason why it works?

If you go to this site and follow the instructions it'll explain to everyone.

I have my suspicions as to why it works when you follow the instructions, but if you just randomly pick a number off the chart and concentrate on the corresponding symbol then click, it doesn't work.

I don't always think clearly early in the morning of the first working day of the week, so any
suggestions?

Kind Regards.

Sally.

I figured this one out a couple of years ago when one of my coworkers referred me to it from a link in one of his emails.

The number requested is two-digit; so if H is the high-order digit and L the low, HL= 10*H + L, where H runs from 1 to 9 (otherwise the number won't be properly two-digit) and L runs from 0 to 9.

The expression the illusionist wants us to calculate is 10*H + L - (H + L), which simplifies to 9*H.

Remember, now, that H runs from 1 to 9, and so the only possible outcomes of the computation are 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, and 81, and if you check the chart against these values, you notice that they all correspond to the same yin/yang symbol - stupid math tricks!

One of these days I'll learn to read more of the responses before I reply. :) Actually, I didn't address the full problem - turns out the symbols change each time you reenter the screen. But check the symbols each time you enter the puzzle, and you notice that those associated with the multiples of 9 I listed always match.

Thanks Celia,

I saw this back in the 90s and kind of freaked out because it was so weird. :) :)

So I spent the time figuring it out. You hit it right on the head. :)

Thanks, Beauty. :) Moments like this make the thousands of dollars and untold sleepless nights I spent getting my BS in mathematics all worth while.
