Job Loss
Hi All,
Yesterday I was notified that my contract would not be renewed. After giving 10 years of my life helping my place of business move into the 21st century (technology wise) they told me the next years budget does not support me.
Came home last night and drank a few Mojitas then some wine then went to bed. Woke up this morning extremely MAD. Went to work and wrote an email to be sent next week, to all the good people I have supported for the last 10 years letting them know how far we have come during that time. I took credit for what I have done did not badmouth those that made the stupid decision to let me go. It is amazing how good that made me feel. (writing that email)
I'm not looking for anything from all of you but just because I feel so close to you I felt as though I needed to share what is going on in my life.
Soon this 63 year old out of work computer technician will be hitting the pavement but for now I'll probably get some things done around the house.
Thanks for listening
Hugs and Kisses
Paige

One of the best things about a place like this is the chance to unload without looking for sympathy...but you'll get sympathy none-the-less, because we hate to see anyone dealing with hard/hurtful times.
I'm hoping you find something even better than what you had before, whether it's better because of location, actual work, pay, co-workers, etc.
Take care and may you fare well!

Hi Paige,
So sorry about your job loss, hon... the computer industry is indeed a fickle one. I met the same fate a couple of years back when they laid off hundreds of people.
But as intelligent & as experienced as you are, there's no doubt in my mind that you'll find something real soon!
*hugs*

As a technical person myself, Paige, I feel for you and feel troubled over the way you've been treated. I don't know whether it's a blessing or a curse that folks like us don't seem to have much luck organizing for our common concerns; but, if we were all to just go fishing one morning and let entropy take its course, I dare say we'd be dictating surrender terms to the world by noon.
Hmm
. . . maybe it is a blessing that we're unable to unite.
Yours,
Celia

I also feel sorry, that you lost your job after such a long period. Well I also was in such a trouble a few years ago, when my job (also IT) was cancelled for economical reasons. Twice.
Anyway I was really lucky, that I found a new job, before the other ran out, and so I just had 8 days of unemployment.
I know - you feel that you were treated unfair and you are right. Nowadays economy is driven by money and shareholder values only. Fairness and loyalty have less importance - sad but true.
On the other hand - the company I work at has 2 open positions for software developers. And even we have about 5 million unemployed people here in Germany - we weren't able to fill these position in the last 6 months.
So head up - specialists with a lot of experience are always wanted.
I whish you all the best.

Hi Paige,
So sorry to hear about your job loss. Nothing can be more unsettling than losing the security of ones job. I too, as I am sure many others have, faced sudden and unexpected job loss. I am sure you will find other gainful employment and continue to prosper.
Good luck to you in your job hunt.
Love always,
Elizabeth

Re: Job Loss
I am very sorry, Paige. Although this is small consolation, we undeniably are living in an era where businesses feel that they are just “making good business decisions” when they treat their employees like they would treat non-human resources. I have gone round-and-round in my thinking about the current business climate. Inevitably, people who were the best-of-the-best when they were hired pave the way for younger people, and firms think that a “new improved version” should be hired every few years, just as we replace our automobile with a newer model every few years.Paige wrote:Yesterday I was notified that my contract would not be renewed. But in business, it might make better “business sense” in the long run to recognize that an employee gains vision as he or she gets to know a field. It might make better sense to promote those who have both the technological skills to know better ideas from dead ends and a broader sense of the industry, based on an acquired vision. That would entail hiring younger employees with special skills to work under those tried-and-true employees with a broader range of understandings. Even the newest recruits from the Stanford College of Engineering would be positively affected by such practices, because they would see themselves as having better futures with the firm.
Take care,
Jamie Ann
