I have been trolling through CD's and MP3's that I have and have been getting back intouch with music I like and was wondering what others here like??? Musically, that is...

Right now I am listening to one of the BEST undiscovered bands around.. they are Austin TX based.... and their name is Back Porch Mary....

Bluesish Rock Based.... they are an amazing band....

Then there is the more main stream music I like.... Pink Floyd, ofcourse... Fleetwood Mac (PRE- Stevie Nicks)..... Dio, Black Sabbath, The Monkees, Queen, many others.... Mostly tend toward the Blues-ish Rock of the late 60's and early 70's... but also a big fan of the early 80's alternative..... REM is the best band after 1985.....

Green Day is great too... Ramones... Peter Gabriel.... Warren Zevon, Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, The Church, the Cure.....

I am rambling...

I basically like all kinds of music except for opera. Not sure why, but just can't handle the screaming all that well (I'd rather be condemned to spend five days in a row listening to Céline Dion... okay, well, maybe three days ).

Favourite genres: ambient electronica, alternative rock, tripno, classical (Baroque especially), acid jazz, world beat, classic rock (from the 70s mostly), house, reggae, female jazz vocalists, and instrumental film soundtracks.

Favourite artists: Howie B, Nine Inch Nails, Peter Gabriel, Marilyn Manson, Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, Youssou N'Dour, Portishead, Graeme Revell, Sheryl Crow, Tones on Tail (yes, and Love and Rockets too), Bill Laswell, U2, Sarah Vaughan, Brian Eno, Rob Zombie, Peggy Lee, Kate Bush, Garth Brooks, Chet Baker, the Talking Heads, Susana Baca, Massive Attack, Jewel, Single Gun Theory, J.S. Bach, Einsturzende Neubaten, Johann Strauss, and our own home-grown Jean Leloup. And on and on.

I could much more survive the rest of my life without ever again slipping into something silky and sexy than I could without ever hearing music again. Hey, a girl's gotta have her priorities straightened out, no?

Hmm . . . just taking a gander at my CD's (no pun intended ) I've got White Zombie, Don Henley, Stones, Zep, The Who, The Band, Prodigy, Porno for Pyros, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy and the Stooges, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Big Wreck, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Brian Eno, The Byrds, CCR, Van Morrison, David Gray, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Neil Young, Aerosmith, Jane's Addiction, Bob Dylan, U2, Pete Townshend . . . I think that's it for the popular. I've also got some classical guitar stuff--Segovia, Christopher Parkening, John Williams, Julian Bream. Any other recordings are on cassette or (gulp!) vinyl, and I'm not going to dig through them to refresh my memory.

Vinyl? What's that?

I like many bands like CJ but unlike CJ I do like opera from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart espically the marriage of Figaro and the Magical Flute. But I also like Huey Lewis and the News and "Weird" Al Yankovic. So my taste is all over the board. I like RB from Will Smith but nothing really harder than that.

For me it hard to narrow it down as I spent most of influnenatl part of life exposed to many bands from my parents. My father (who at one time) was only one of three CPAs that would deal with musicans in three state area. So I got to meat a lot of bands. However two that I like the most are the Beetleas and the Grateful Dead (the Jerry years).

But if I have to choose a local band that I like that would be too slim and the taildraggers (http://www.tooslim.org/). All clients of my dad and I think a great band. But I have trouble saying that as two of my brothers have bands also. My half-brother (who is currentaly in africa) was in four bands. My Step-Brother still has his band going based out of Seattle.

Heck I was even named after two musicans (real name). Though I can not play and insturment.

Music is like a sunrise for me.

I really enjoy classical music, it's really soothing for your ears and mind. But I do like other music as well. I think it's just best to name few bands, like you all have.

Rainbow, Deep Purple, The Beatles, Queen. And while I don't play that many games anymore, there are some games that have really great soundtracks that I like to listen sometimes.

You're right about game soundtracks. One I used to listen to over and over again because it was so soothing is the soundtrack to Riven (Myst 2). What beautiful, haunting, lilting music, mournful yet elevating at the same time! I like Enya's music for pretty much the same reasons. The themes from Riven were taken up again in Exile (Myst 3) but were developed in an orchestral fashion--still great, but not as "intimate."

What game music were you thinking of, Jadhe?

It's true, I don't like opera, but I love sacred music such as Mozart's and Fauré's Requiems, Bach's Oratorios, and Vivaldi's and Pergolesi's Stabat Maters. I often cry when I listen to them.

I'm stuck in the late 50's all of the 60's and 70's. Seems that after that I some how slipped away from music. At times I miss it but if anything anymore it's just background music that relaxes me. However, and this may sound out there, I love Christmas Holiday music of any kind at any time of the year. I have hundreds of CD's of hoiday music and a CD player that stores 400 CD's and I have them all on random play. Time we down our gay apparal fa la la. Don't pay any attention I just here making noise.

Christmas music, eh? I think Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley are neck in neck for the best rendition of White Christmas. Any others you can recommend?

I think i would do better naming music i don't like! I am a music addict. I actually need music. Can't live without it. It's kinda like air. Even when there's no radio or CD player, I still hum or sing tunes in my head. I listen to everything, although I don't listen to much Opera. It's, in my opinion, an accompaniment to theatrical acting, and i believe they go hand in hand. I haven't seen enough to derive much of a liking to it. (I don't dislike it, i'm kinda indifferent to Opera)
I also find myself going through "stages" of musical taste. I have been through Heavy Metal, Light Classical, Jazz, Blues, Christian, New Age, Calypso, Reggae, Rap, and even listen to a little Hip-hop. My taste in music changes with my mood.
Music is definitely my favorite art form.
Maybe i'm dating myself a bit, but I'll admit to having Vinyl LP's, and even a few 8 track tapes.
I can't say i have one favorite band or singer. There are so many i truly cherish and admire.
I think the term audiophile would apply to me. I'm not much of a critic, simply one who has i high degree of appreciation for the art.

Oops, there i go babbling on and on again. I'll shut up now. Great subject though, I'd like to know how others feel.

Hmmm, music. I guess I like a lot of variety too, like Kyra and CJ. A handfull at my computer include pop, classical, electronic tonalities, and more. What I listen to depends on my mood and what I am doing. Enya, Clenad, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Handel, Vivaldi, de Falla, Puccini (Madame Butterfly, yes even some opera I find of value), Beethoven, Bach, Mike Oldefield, Vangelis, Coyote Oldman, slightly updated Andean flute music (Inca mostly--remember El Condor Pasa?), Native American dance music, Annie Lennox, kd lang, New Order, Delerium, Audio Slave, Sarah McLachlan, and the soft jazz of the unusual Grae Phillips. Most of my jazz tends toward the soft and female vocalists, and is in the car or at work. Same for most of the classical, a good part of which is on cassette. NO rap crap, no C&W "sombody done somebody wrong, crying in my beer" junk, though I do like Bluegrass and Ballads. I enjoy Irish and Scottish music, jigs, reels, and ballads as well. I have one Bobby McFarland cd, but Reggae is not my favorite. Guess that covers it. Oh, yeah, the Oldies Rock too, though I have little of that music in my collection anymore. My little sister scavenged most of it years ago. Like some others have written, I will often have the memory of music in my mind if I have nothing to hear it on.

At one end of the spectrum I like Brian Eno (Music for Airports), Harold Budd, Richard Bone, Tim Story, Jon Mark, and Tony O'Connor, . . . now if only radio programmers would wake up to the subtle brilliance these artists pocess . . .

while at the other end its Jane's Addiciton, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Hole, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Soundgarden, The Pixies, Joy Division, Radiohead, U2, STP and plenty of others that would fill an entire playlist for a "Classic Alternative" radio station " . . .

IMO the best CD released in 2003 was . . . *drum roll*
. . . Jane's Addiciton's "Strays".

xmas music? tony o'connor, john serrie and john doan all have highly regarded xmas CDs.

My music tastes are rather scattered. I love just about every type of music except Gangsta Rap. Though I do like a few bands that are considered rap.
