Back from Iceland

Post by Lydia »

Hi all,

You probably didn't notice, but I've been away for the past three weeks. I read here more than I write. Just got back from a cruise with my SO.

We started in Copenhagen and ended up in Amsterdam, but the highlight was three days in Iceland. A remarkable country and a more remarkable people. Holland-America is a great line to travel on. Food & service were first class.

I did use their Internet Cafe on board, but only to check my email. At $0.75 /min, one doesn't fritter time.

We ate too much, and drank too much good wine. Now diet time.

Good to be back and read about all my friends here.

Hugs,

Willy

Hi Willy--
It's been more than three weeks since I've seen a post by you, so it's good to see you back. Nice trip itinerary, too. Iceland would be interesting to see. A drag hostess that I knew when first performing came from there. Hence we had "Bjork nights" at that particular show.

So you'll be doing laps down at the pool to work off all the good food?

Thanks all. Good to be back. Finally recovering from jet lag.

No 'dressing' opportunities on the trip, although I took my nice pink nightie that my SO admired.

We had some problems getting started because of hurricane Dennis and flight cancellations. I have one strong recommendation, however: avoid De Gaulle airport at all costs. It is the most disorganized in the world. Kestrup in Copenhagen is a model by contrast.

The Icelandic language is fascinating. Possibly the nearest to the speech of the old Vikings.

We were on a cruise that stopped a day each in Akureyri and Isafjord on the north coast, and then Reykiavik. We took tours, but also wandered in towns. Scenery is spectacular but grim. People friendly and happy. Food is hearty and fish are very fresh. Prices are astronomical.

Example: 1 post card = $1 + $1.75 to mail it. We stopped at a local fish/chips place for lunch. Had delicious fresh cod and a beer each. Price: $90, plus tip.

Country is self-sufficient in energy. They have off-shore oil, and geothermal energy heats their water and houses. Yet they are the first country to have commercially hydrogen cell powered vehicles. Private cars with hydrogen power are expected in a year or two, but meanwhile many of the city busses are hydrogen powered. They have huge areas set aside as wild preserves. We could take lessons.

Enough. Email me if you want more.
