Ewwwww.... it's Reformatting time!!!

Post by Lorna »

I have to reformat my hard drive as my computer has running extremely slow for the past couple of days. Reformatting isn't the problem; the big headache is saving onto disk all of the files that I neglected to back up in the past. :?

Noton Antivirus software - check.
Picture files - check.
Text files & other important documents - check.
Drivers - check.
All my programs spanning from Word & Excel to Photoshop & iTunes to Dreamweaver & Cold Fusion - check.

Well, after 7 hours of burning disks, I am finally ready to reformat. Whew! :?

Good luck with it Lorna.

I hope you tried all the other tools for speeding up your system first, however. Like defrag, disk cleanup or clean sweep, check memory settings, etc.

Lorna.. Hi..

There are computer progs out there (which i also need) which takes a image of your pc hard drive (of the stuff you have) and saves it either onto a couple or few cd's or onto some of the hard drive space. then if you need to wipe and install the hard drive, then takes the long job of that and installs from the image.. and saves time.. instead of hours and hours of installing.. about 7 minuets depending on how much stuff you have on the drive(s).

Hi Lorna,

Don't forget:

- Favorites folder
- Password lists

A lot of people miss these when they format their drives. I know I have. By the way, a little freeware program I use that I find very helpful is called PassKeeper. It's a tiny, unobtrusive program that stores your passwords in one place (a word of caution, though: it's not "transportable" from one drive to another--if you remove or copy its folder data file, the information will be deleted as a precautionary measure). You can find the program here: http://www.passkeeper.com/

Good luck, Lorna!

Love,
CJ

Thanks for the tips, ladies... It's all done now, my computer is running perfectly, and all my files & programs are in place & running tip top. =D>

Oh SHOOT!!! The fonts! The fonts!! I forgot to save the FONTS!!! Doh! #-o

Not the standard Windows XP fonts, but I had a bunch of cool ones I used for graphic design purposes. Awww, man! #-o Took me a year to collect 'em. But oh well, no biggie. I remember what most of them are, and have the names written down. :-k

All good suggestions on how to avoid a total reformat, however, there's nothing like a totally fresh install!

Your computer will run a smooth as freshly shaven legs. :)
