Apr 5, 2006 — LONDON (Reuters) - American singer Gene Pitney, who shot to fame in the 1960s with hits including "24 Hours from Tulsa," has died while on tour in Britain, his agent said on Wednesday.

Jene Levy said Pitney, 65, was found dead on Wednesday morning in the Welsh capital Cardiff where he had given a concert the previous night that won him a standing ovation.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

I'm glad he was out on tour, doing what he loved to do.

I'm surprised that he's only 65. That would make him only ten years older than me, but his musical style put him in an older generation than that. "Town Without Pity"--I think that's Gene Pitney. Very different from "Can't Explain," by the Who, or the Kinks doing "You Really got me."

It's not like I bought his records, but he was part of my growing up listening to top 40 radio. "The Man who Shot Liberty Valance" was one of his.

That is very odd I had "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" running through my head last night. I had not even heard that he died or who sang the song for that matter.

R.I.P. Gene... ~~oo~~

And just because his music was "before my time" does not mean I don't know who he was... I'm a music geek - remember that

Anyway, 65 is definitely way too young to go. I like his music. :(

When the people - like entertainers - that we grew up with start leaving this "veil of tears" like Gene and Buck Owens and Johnny Cash and, well, maybe we are not as invincible as we think!

"Town without pity" We all know that one, don't we girls. I live about 40 minutes from where he grew up. Rockville Ct. All the people from Rockville are quite unique! I went to college with one and he ended up robbing a bank! He didn't have any money to but new panties! Can't blame him though! :) Hugs

Love

He probably died drowing in his own vomit, isn' t this how all rockers die.

The only song that I remember is "It Hurts to be in Love"
