I know I haven't posted much lately but...

...here's why.

I'll start with an update. After the chair store cut back my hours I finally found a job with a mortgage company. I was walking on clouds for only about a week. In fact I think I may have rejoiced prematurely.

I know that many opf you have read countless rants from me about being out of work, which was why I was hesitant to post this. But I trust you ladies, plus you've all been nothing but WONDERFUL to me (even in my bitchy moments) for as long as I have been here. And fior that i am forever grateful to you all. Thanks for having tolerated me for this long. I know that for this I have acquired a debt to you all I can never repay but I hope that I eventually can. Anway here goes...

Perhaps it serves me right for jumping at the first job to call me back after months of nothing. But what else could I have done? We all know the job market SUCKS.

I shouldn't have counted my chickens to soon... but I did. I sure learned my lesson. :?

So let me tell you about this travesty of a job. I was promised a Loan Officer position when I agreed to take this job. But instead I am working as a receptionist for not much more than minimum wage. I was duped! And as much as retail sucked, I now regret leaving. I left one manure job to go to another. The only tradeoff is a MUCH longer daily commute to work for the same lousy pay as Macys.

Every morning I leave my place at 7:30 for a 2 hour commute in the freezing cold to get to work by 9:30 - my start time.

For the next 9 1/2 hours I am ripping my hair out, dealing with demented salespeople, bad-tempered cigar-smoking bosses with short-term memory, and foul-mouthed clients. I don't even take a full lunch (nobody in the office does which SUCKS - hence i still have to answer phones while I'm trying to eat) And when someone else screws up, the blame eventually gets shifted to ME. I have also been thrown into the role of Office manager, meanwhile in my 3 weeks there, I can only know so much about how things operate. I am NOT going to know 100% of what is what in that time.

And when I stick up for myself in those instances I'm accused of being "postal" & told to calm down.

Anyway, when the grueling day is over with it's another 2 hour commute back to my neighborhood followed by a 30 minute walk in freezing cold weather.

I get home at 9pm every night. That's 13 1/2 hpurs out of my day.

I don't know how much more of this I can take.

Sadly, I CANNOT quit until something else comes along. I WON'T. Apparently I've been in some sort of "job limbo" since 2003. I was out of work for 2 months before having landed this lousy gig. If I were at least being paid what a human being can survive on, i wouldn't care about the commute or the long days or the absence of a lunch or a break or just a few minutes in the 9 1/2 hour day to recharge.

However there IS good news and THIS is the bottom line : I cannot WAIT for the results of my Civil Service tests.

I am THROUGH with private companies. All they do is futz around with their employees, pay them next to SQUAT and lay people off at the drop of a hat.

PUBLIC employment is the way to go for me! Better pay, better benefits, better JOB SECURITY, a pension after 20 years... no more private employment for me.... EVER.

Hi Lorna,

Sure hope you get your test reuslts soon.

You know, sometimes those loan officer jobs are worse than what you are doing now. And that usually depends on what types of loan processing is being performed.

For example, when my wife was working for a loan underwriting company, the tactics and lying that went on to get people to apply for a loan were just too much for her too handle. People that didn't really qualify for loans were given them at extremely high interest rates which would leave them in dept forever, or bankrupt them.

You know how Lt. Caine on the show CSI Miami talks to others without raising his voice? Try it with the a**holes you work with. It works.

Lorna,
You know I try not be be negative, especially on this forum. But this topic hits home for me! I think this country is in serious trouble. It is like we are all skating on some veryvery thin ice and it is starting to crack! Your experience and what Donna posted are just a couple of examples. Some realtor or their clients stole my wallet out of my house (house is for sale and a lot of people go through it) anyway. I had to go to two dfferent banks I have to use (long story) anyway I filled out the forms for new credit cards - they cancelled the stolen ones, but after two weeks no new cards. Went to both yesterday to see why - both "OH we are so sorry, don't know why? We will look into it!" I told them their records indicate they cancelled the stolen cards and the request for new cards were on the same form!!!!
I had an American Express card also. Called them and had a new card the very next day by FedEX!!!!!
The thing I see is the business places I go from WalMart to shoestores to restaurants and MY BANKS - no one cares - their attitude is "Hey, I got paid last week, the employers check did not bounce, so I am good for one more week so ---- screw you! You don't pay me so I don't owe you nuttin!!
It is sad. I just don't see how this country operates. I use to follow the old adage "Vote with your feet!" Don't get good service don't go back! I am running out of place to go cause none of them seem to want your business or for that matter, heaven forbid go out of there way to help someone!!
Just my observations.

Hi, Lorna -

!!!yes!!! with Donna and Virginia.

I truly feel for you, honey - been there, done that - and that was while I was working for not only the insurance industry (claims dept.) but also in the legal field (legal sec'y and para-legal).

I believe it was Harry S. Truman who always said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Of course, before you can speak softly to them you have to get their attention!

Kill them with kindness - bite your tongue if you have to, but say what you have to say with a smile and a calm voice. It's all a part of playing mind games with them, and you'll have them so confused they won't know what hit them until it's too late!! Another thing - when someone says something very rude to you, etc. - don't respond, either verbally or with a raised eyebrow, or the like - he/she who responds/speaks next loses. Always.

Best of luck with the Civil Service test!

:kisscheek:

You know I have to feel sorry for people in the working class now. I ran printing presses all my life made damn good money and had a trade union to back me all my life. Now a days you work for peanuts no unions
(well there are still a few around) and if you don't like it lump it and theres the front door. I'm lucky a good pension and S.S. no bills and money in the bank. God help the kids trying to find work in the furture.

I used to work as a data entry clerk for an insurance company for over four years. However, my exellent attendence and job performance was overlooked by the management. They seemed to be favoring the insurance underwriters who got all of the perks, prestige, and job recognition. The data entry and filing clerks didn't have any public contact with customers at all; we didn't have any phones at ours desks!

I worked as an accounting clerk for a produce company for over three years. Different industry, same results again. The sales managers who worked with the vendors over the phones got all of the perks, customer attention, Christmas gifts from the vendors, etc. It wasn't any fun working in the accounting department and being overshadowed by others in the sales department. I left the produce company over a year ago.

If you are liked by the management, you tend to receive better treatment than those that they dislike. If you are not at the bottom of the employment ladder, you also tend to have more recognition from management. Besides lower income levels, does this explain why lower level jobs have high levels of turnover?

Thanks ladies! (--)

At this point in my life, even though my posts have shown you that I tend to be a very complex individual, my needs are fairly simple:

- something that pays enough for me to support myself
- benefits such as health insurance
- some sort of retirement plan

Public employment will offer all of these and then some. That’s my plan. That’s my goal. Once my foot is in the door I can take care of the rest. At that point I will know exactly how to re-establish myself.

Now I know that there are still some private companies out there that do take care of their employees, but I just can't afford to invest my trust in any of them anymore.

NO amount of abuse in any public sector can be worse than what I've gone through. If so, then they're breaking the law.

I hope everything works out for you Hun

Lorna. I hope you do great on the CS test and get some job security. The trend in this country is disturbing. I remember a few years ago I was listening to a speech by Lestor Thorough. He was the Dean of the Sloane School of Management at MIT. He said "The only way the US can compete in a world market is to lower their standard of living. " All the CEO's took that to heart. They have been lowering the standard of living for all their employees while making obscene amounts of money for themselves. They literally take hundreds of millions out of the businesses as compensation ,but when the rank and file want a .50 and hour raise they say there is no money. The middle class is slowy disappearing How much money do these people need? How can they live like kings in many different multi million dollar homes when their employees are having trouble paying their rent or mortgage and worrying how they will send their kids to college? It's disgusting and just pure greed. One of the seven deadly sins.I don't know how they can live with themselves. It's beyond me. They feed off the the people who can least afford it. Capitalism is out of control. I wish you nothing but the best Lorna. Hugs and kisses.

Love
Jeannie

PS. It makes me so mad. If there is a God in Heaven, they're in big trouble. They will be lighting their Cuban cigars off the walls when they die. Sorry ladies. This got my back up. I can't stand selfish, unfair, self absorbed people. They need their own website. "It's all about me .com"

Thank you Jeannie!! (--)

But ladies.... hold on to your hats, the story gets better...

There has been illegal activity going on here on top of everything else. I can SO expose his backside!!!

Now right off I do NOT wish to be the stool pigeon here, but I feel I have no choice, especially in the matters of where one's JOB is concerned. The law is the law. He's breaking at least a 1/2 dozen laws in the office (including unauthorized smoking, cheating on various deals, & sexual harrassment) And if something were to go down, his backside would go to jail & he'd be out of business in no time flat.

I know that 4 weeks is far too long to put up the level of abuse that I have.

I know that I have sacrificed my pride, dignity and self-worth. I have degraded myself to levels I dare not even mention here. It is now at a point where I'm starting to feel "dirty", the way a rape victim feels.

Therefore I HAVE TO TAKE ACTION.

He needs to be taught a serious lesson. And the old Ex-Lax-in-the-coffee-prank just will not suffice in this case. (By the way I fetch his damn coffee every morning - I could either spit or boogers or Ex-Lax into his coffee, but an unepected visit from the police - a tipoff from an anonymous caller would be much more sinister & diabolical)

But you didn't hear that from me... [-X

Lorna -

Just remember to document everything - dates, times, people, etc. - and get photographs, if possible.

The 'whistle blower' needs to cover their own a$$ as well, but I agree that people who knowingly break the law as well as those who sexually harass their employees or co-workers, need to be reported to the proper authorities.

Please take care of yourself - which I know you will do anyway - and CYA!!!
