Comedian George Carlin dead at age 71

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - A publicist for George Carlin says the legendary comedian has died of heart failure at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.
Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Hospital on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT. He was 71.
The dean of counterculture comedians, Carlin constantly pushed the envelop with his jokes, particularly with a routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV." When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace. And when they were played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a Supreme Court ruling in 1978 upholding the government's authority to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language.

I loved George Carlin; he was a !@?#!% genius. As late as a mere two months ago, I was reading his "Brain Droppings." He was a master of the pithy witticism.

May he finally find the peace of mind that so eluded him in this imperfect, "moron-filled" world.

I think God was looking for someone to replace his current crop of comedians, John Belusi, Freddy Prince, et.al! He got a good one with George. I always laugh when I think about his "Hippy Dippy weatherman" routine...................... "however the radar is also picking up a flight of incoming Russian ICBMs so I wouldn't sweat the thunderstorms!"

One of his quotes which may be more a truism than he may have intended at the time which stuck firmly in my mind was, "I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

Hi Ladies
71 is young for George to leave us but I guess it was his time. He always had a great take on life,religion and polictics. I remember him saying:

"Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a long period of time."

At least we know in the afterlife in Heaven there will some laughs with,George,Richard Pryor,Sam Kinison,Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce. Something to look forward to girls especially if your Catholic.
You can do anything you want ,go to confession, clear the slate and your in! Sweet!

George was raised Catholic so he goes to Heaven by default whether he likes it or not. If you start out Catholic and quit, it's like trying to get out of the Mafia. "I try to get out but they keep pulling me back in."
You have a better chance of going on hunting trip with Dick Cheney and coming back alive Donna. Hugs.

When I attempt to clear the clutter in my house (and believe me, I have clutter) I always thing of GC's "stuff" routine and smile. It makes it all easier to lead a cluttered life. He will be missed. Gosh Jeannie, the nuns never told me about the default setting for heaven admission, guess they were too busy whacking my knuckles with their rulers. But, RIP, George...but doubt that you can...St Peter needs a new dress and a sense of humor.

Hi fellow Catholics
The last time I went to confession the Priest gave me 4000 Hail Marys and Our Fathers for penance. I have no hope.
Speaking of Saint Peter,when Mother Teresa died she went to the Pearly Gates and Saint Peter let her in and gave her a little Halo. While walking around Heaven she ran into Princess Di and she had this big Halo.
Mother Teresa went back to Saint Peter and said:

" Saint Peter! I dedicated my whole life to the sick,dying and the poorest of poor. Lady Di was born into privilege, did some volunteer work and she gets a bigger halo than me?"

"Relax!" said Saint Peter "That's not a halo, it's a steering wheel!"

Loved George. He taught me to spell GE-OR-GE, the name that one could go spelling for infinity. And I'll never forget the night the Hippy-Dippy-Weather man showed on the big map how there was a dust storm coming up out of the South-West, a tropical storm blowing in out of the Gulf of Mexico, and a Canadian Clipper coming down into the Central plains where they would all three collide and we were expecting Mud Flurries

I agree - George Carlin was unique, clever, and uproariously direct. However, I saw him about a year ago here in Sarasota, and his performance was lack-luster. Every second word was f***k or its derivative. In his books, especially "Brain Droppings", his play with words and "holy" concepts was incredibly funny and apt. I found these comments even funnier if one removed the offending expletives which came with nauseating frequency.

I find that a lot of current comics (off TV, of course) add the nasty words as if for shock value. These words have power, and, as Carlin himself demonstrated in his "Seven Words...", by repeating them they lose their efficacy. Maybe that was his intention all along? For me, this incessant repetition took away some of the effect - but maybe my generation gap is showing.

No question that Carlin was a master and a genius, but he stood on the shoulders of an equal master: Lenny Bruce.
