Critical Error - Closed
At aprox. 5:25 am I attempted to post a reply to Robyn's thread "Why do we want to" and when I hit the preview button I got an error page, php BB Critical Error, could not connect to data base. Took over an hour to write and was among the best pieces i have written and it's gone. What would account for that?

I've been getting that too for the last few days, obviously something a bit squiffy going on in the machine.
Sorry you lost your piece, if it is any help I always pre-write mine in another window and copy and paste it in so I know it's not lost if the ghosts in the machine get in the way. No help now Cecilia I know, but just a thought for another time.

Hi, Cecilia and Kay -
Sorry about your lost response! I don't have a firm answer for the critical error message you received, but we'll check into it as soon as possible. Our current Software Admin has been extremely busy at work IRL and has not been able to visit the forum for a while.
I do know that if you are logged in for a period of time with no apparent "page-to-page" activity - such as when you were writing your post - that the software will automatically 'time you out' . . . it's happened to me in the past, too.
Like Kay, I always write my long responses in another program, such as Word, and copy/paste the text to the forum, and I always save my writings several times while composing them to ensure that they don't get blown away by a pc/cyber malfunction.
If anyone is receiving this or any other critical error message, please copy the message in its entirety and send it to me via PM, along with all the details of when it happened, what you were doing when it happened, did you have to log in again, etc. The more information that we have, the quicker it will be to determine where the problem lies, and the quicker it will be to fix the error, if it can be fixed.
Thank you, and have a great day!

Thanks Silver Lady & Kay,
Well it may have been a time out. Perhaps a "remember me" function would be practical.
I do use another program, cut & paste most of the time, but I had an insght that began to flow and had to get it down while it was happening. The ironic thing is, for some of the ladies here the post was in the "give me/us a break,, hun", category, lol, but I'll give it another go sometime anyway. Cecilia
Edit: Does the "automatically log me in" function prevent time outs... like the "remember me" button?

You're very welcome, Cecilia.
The time-outs are features built into the software to prevent over-burdening the server with inactive, but logged-in, members, which causes the server to run much slower than it should.

Actually, neither of those options will prevent time outs . . . their only purpose is to save your log-in data.CeciliaO wrote:Edit: Does the "automatically log me in" function prevent time outs... like the "remember me" button?

I might add that no matter how many times I check the "remember me" box, I find I have to log in 90% of the time. When I brought this up, Caith opined that it was some quirk in AOL that does this. However, if I use something other than AOL, the forum still refuses to "remember me".
Is someone trying to tell me something? Or am I being paranoid?
Hugs,
Lydia

Lydia,
I suspect that "remember me" is handled by cookies on your machine. I use Firefox with the option to delete cookies when I close Firefox. If I leave the site and come back without closing the browser I am still identified as Susan here. You may want to try setting for cookies in your browser and see where that gets you.
This is just an idea from me.
