My recent program of study in gender issues...

General talk about CD/TGing and gender topics that aren't necessarily fun things we do while en femme, or for gender-driven discussions.

My recent program of study in gender issues...

Post by Allena »

Just thought I'd pass along my current/proposed reading list and movie collection.

Some of these have been posted by other folks before.

I am currently reading again, Dress Codes by Noelle Howey.
My wife recently read it and found it helpful. She thought I should read it again.
She is now reading a second book by Noelle and another author titled, "Out of the Ordinary: Essays on Growing Up with Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Parents".

I recently finished the book, "Sexual Metamorphosis: An Anthology of Transsexual Memoirs" by Jonathan Ames.

A while back, I had read "My Husband Betty", and picked through some of the other CD books like "My Husband Wears My Clothes".

On my 'to read' list are ( and I have these books on my shelf) :
Virtually Normal: An argument about homosexuality
(I thought it was the other 'Normal' book about CD'rs, and after I realized my mistake I figure I might read this afterall)

As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised As a Girl
by John Colapinto

Christine Jorgensen: A Personal Autobiography

Queer Theory, Gender Theory: An Instant Primer
by Riki Wilchins

Changing Ones: Third and Fourth Genders in Native North America
by Will Roscoe

I get most of my books from second-hand stores.
Here's a few movies I own:

The Dress Code
It's billed as a comedy, but I found it much more serious because of personal experiences as a child.

Ma Vie En Rose (My Life In Pink)
This was suggested by a woman I see about my ADD/HD and subsequently my other personal issues.
This was an especially hard movie for me to watch. I was alone when I first saw it. I would like my wife to see it first, then our daughter.

Girls Will Be Girls
WHAT A FUNKY MOVIE! While I wouldn't buy it/watch it for pure entertainment purposes, I did find some relative elements in it in connection with my life.

We don't watch television in our house. Internet is already bad enough for me, cable would be WORSE (satellite too! ), and we only get one fuzzy local channel by aerial.
So, I guess I miss alot of those wonderful programs like Sally Jessie Rafael (is she still on?), Phil Donahue (I'll bet he's been off the air a long time, huh? ), etc.
But we also miss the programs from channels like TLC, PBS, etc. , unless we stay at a hotel.

Lately, my wife and I have been discussing my CD/Possible TS issues and so we've both been seeking more information.

Thanks ..o)..

Thanks for the list Allen.

On a side note: Although buying used books may be money wise, if the published books are as recent as within 25 years and especially if the authors are still alive and recieving royalties from book sales, please buy new books from the author or a bookstore.

Most authors really don't make a good deal of money on their books, and make none on used books being resold. By buying new, you will provide funds to the author who in turn will be able to afford to write new books.

Thanks.

Hi,

I agree with Donna here. The best compliment you can give an author is to buy a book from someone has to report royalties, so the publisher and author can make money. When they do make money we get more books from them. :)

Great advice Donna! =D> =D> =D>

Discovery Health Channel

Post by Rikki »

Allen,
One thing to be said for cable TV is the variety and diversity of programming. Like last night there were two hours of documentaries on TG transformations and gender I.D. situations that are very enlightening on Discovery Health Channel. It even gave me food for thought about myself and my feelings. Wish I could get my wife to watch such a program. Those stories were amazing and very balanced in their position. rr

Thanks All!

I do like to buy new, especially from the smaller publishing houses.
We have a couple of excellent small, locally-owned bookstores that I drop in on when I'm in that town shopping.

What I like about these stores is that they carry books I never see in the larger chain-stores. Although, Borders and the other one do have a nice mix sometimes.

The book about Native American 3rd/4th genders is a new book from one of those small bookstores, so is Queer Theory, Gender Theory.

I REALLY wish we could just get the channels we want on cable without all the other crappy stuff.
Until that becomes a reality, we'll just be out of the loop.
One of the joys of staying in a hotel is that we can channel-surf for the better programs.

It's interesting that when we visit family, mine and my wife's, we don't spend time watching t.v. there either.
Some of the homes have cable, but we're too busy doing other stuff to stop and watch the boobtube.

I grew up with the t.v. on all the time!
We used to eat dinner with the t.v. on.
I'd steal glances from the table.
My mother and stepfather slept in different rooms for the last several years of his life.
They BOTH had televisions going 24/7!
When I go to stay at my Mother's house, I sleep in my old room which is just close enough to hear all the noise, but not enough to keep me awake.

Is there some kind of list for reference materials and/or materials of passing interest like movies, related to CD/gender themes?
