A new look

Post by JoAnnDallas »

I am letting my hair grow out and it is now below my ears and almost down to the back of my neck. I have started noticing more people at first calling me "Mam" then correct themselves. LOL. My plan is to get it styled in a unsex style. One that will look fem when I am dressed but male or Angro when in drab.
Has anyone else done this. If so how much success have you had?

I've had my hair in a pony tail for years. No one has ever called me maam however, perhaps because of the beard. Also it still looks like guys hair.

I never wear it down, always in the pony tail. Otherwise it gets in the way and annoys me.

my hair is about an inch past my ears, and the back is almost shoulder length. I'll let it keep going a little more, then I plan on getting it trimmed and styled fem. I have never been mistaken I think for being female, when in my work clothes. and thats jeans and a sweater. I think once I most of my facial hair is all gone, and I trim / pluck my eyebrows to a fem appearane, it may improve things. Some makeup helps me too. I look forward to the day a SA calls me maam.

Right now my hiar is about 17" long. As long as I wear it iin a ponytail when in drab, I have very seldom been called mam. When I let it down though I have been called mam on several occasions.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that my face is has masculan features and the hiar being down tends to distract from them. Also when my hair is down I often use hair ornments to keep it out of my face.

Hi JoAnn and all. When I knew I was going to transition, I started doing things for myself. First was letting my hair grow. I had already started a year before, so I just let it go. Kept it pulled back into a pony tail some, let it free others, and just enjoyed the feel of the wind through my hair. It was shot with gray, but grew to my shoulder blades by the time I explained the facts of my life to my colleagues in 2006, about 10 months into therapy. I had been growing my hair out for several years by then. I changed my name and "transitioned" to full time in Sept. 2006. Just before I had to appear before the judge, I went to a trans friendly hair stylist and she cut my hair with a bang fringe and showed me how to give it more lift and body. When I appeared before the judge, I was appropriately made up, dressed and coifed, nails polished and shining, borws thinned, and was surprisingly self-possessed. No, truthfully, I felt really great!!! :) Then I got a new DL and visited Social Security for a name change.

With my longer hair and waxed brows and the changes to my face from 16 months on hrt, I was being gendered female most of the time in drab anyway. Once, my face was quite swollen from an intensive session of electrolysis at E-2000, and I was still gendered female by the waitstaff and checker at a cafe, even in drab! lifted my spirits!!!

Another nice thing you can do for yourselves, if you have not, is go by a friendly salon and have your brows waxed into a nice arch. It can really open up your eyes and add to your fem presentation, but you can control the thickness so that it will not be too obvious, or you can go for a nice thin or tapering eyebrow. It also enables you to keep them kinda cleaned up with a set of tweezers. Usually only women notice unless you are well known for bushy eyebrows or a unibrow. Most men just think you look well groomed if you're in drab.

Hi JoAnn,

I have worn my hair long for years at work, and now in retirement I can pretty much do with it as I please. At present I keep it to about the middle of my back when drawn back in a pony tail.

The problem is what to do with it when it's down. I like wearing it down, and fixing it in different ways suggested for women with straight hair, but have not gone the salon styling route. I'll be very interested to hear how it goes for you.

I might just work up to getting curly with a home perm sometime.

In the meantime, I've been having fun with adding inexpensive hair extensions -- the ones I have are mounted on a simple hair claw, but of course you can get more complex and sophisticated ones, all the way up to a wig.

I love long hair and couldn't bear to have it shorter -- on the other hand, anything longer than the middle of my back presents problems of weight and hassle in combing after shampoos, etc. It's all a tradeoff.

Enjoy your new longer hair,

Love, Robyn Katie

Hi JoAnn
Even though J preferred it short, with her agrement I now have my hair a lot longer. My hairdresser knows I CD she is a genius with the shears and cuts my hair on the feminine side of unisex. Thank goodness I took after my Mum who is 80+ and still with a full head of hair and not a grey one in sight. My young bro, got my Dads hair style, very thin on top, makes me smile every time I see him  .
When I am dressed my hair is just about right for a lady of my advancing years so with a pair of clip-on ear-rings to match my outfit it looks fine. When in drab I've only been ma'amed four times in the last year :) last time was on a ferry in a queue for breakfast  with my wife beside me but she missed it [-o< .

I had my hair cut in Sept last year before attending my class reunion. I let it grow afterwards, and my wife kept assuming/accusing I was up to something.

I liked the longer look, as it made me appear younger than my 53+ yrs, but I got it cut on her birthday Feb. 3.

Took her a bit to notice.
