Burlesque, anyone?

General talk about CD/TGing and gender topics that aren't necessarily fun things we do while en femme, or for gender-driven discussions.

Burlesque, anyone?

Post by CJ »

Hi all,

I'm a little too young to remember the days of the burlesque show here in Montreal (which would've been from about 1940 to 1960) but I do know that I like Bettie Page's sense of style.

Well, in just a little over a month's time, we'll be experiencing a local revival of the Art of the Tease with Montreal's First Annual Burlesque Festival. Now don't you all go booking your tickets all at once, y'hear! :P

True to my own nature, the crossdresser in me is presently at war with the feminist in me over this kind of spectacle. But what the hell, eh! Life can't always be about being serious, no? Thus, I, for one, plan to attend. At least on one of the four nights the event is scheduled to run. I'll let you all know how it turned out. Let the satin and lace fall where they will. 8)

Love,
CJ

I attended a Burlesque show in San Diego California in 1965. A group of us were sending a friend off to Guam for two years and we feared for his sanity. (We were right, as he came home married to a school teacher.) San Diego was still very much a Navy town, and the theatre was an old one, the performances kinda like a last gasp of Burlesque in the town. The comics were of an older generation, and their schtick was typical of the Burlesque comics, with a mixture of one or two liners with sexual innuendo, as the themes, and such slapstick as they were still capable of. The strippers, well some of them were of an older generation too, but pretty well preserved under the soft stage lighting they preferred. There were a few younger strippers as well. It was somewhat entertaining, but would have been better if liquor was served to loosen everyone up.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies, y'all.

No, I'm not planning on attending en femme, Donna. I haven't crossdressed (I mean in "full regalia") in four years now and doing so at this point in time would just require too much of me, I'm afraid. No, I'll just be content to be a part of the usual crowd of balding middle-aged guys looking for a glimpse of stocking while sipping a beer.

Thanks for the compliment, V., but please see the paragraph above. It may be that "It" runs in the family but you have to remember that the Bunnies at the Playboy Club were basically nothing more than cotton-tailed cocktail waitresses, not strippers.

Carolynn,

If you watch some of the videos on the Festival's page (link in OP), you may get a sense that there's a new generation into this kind of "performance art." Funny, one of the tease artists mentioned in one video bears the exact same name as an ex-girlfriend of mine (who, although a performer, was not--as far as I know--a stripper). I had to look a little closer to make sure, though. You never know.

Love,
CJ

Ah - memories.

I am old enough to remember sneaking into Minsky's Burlesque on 42nd Street in New York. In those days it was the "full monty". I do remember that in the midst of teenager trembling ecstasy, I wished I could do that and look like that.

Hugs,

Lydia
