Oakland moves to legalize cross-dressing

General talk about CD/TGing and gender topics that aren't necessarily fun things we do while en femme, or for gender-driven discussions.

Oakland moves to legalize cross-dressing

Post by DonnaT »

OAKLAND — More than 130 years after city leaders made it illegal to appear in public dressed "in the attire of a person of the opposite sex," Oakland finally moved Tuesday toward taking a little-known ordinance against cross-dressing off its books.

City Council members voted 7-0 in a first vote on removing the language in question from Oakland's municipal code, in what at-large City Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan called an important change given how such ordinances have been used in the past.

A second and final vote is scheduled for May 18.

Yes, I've been an Oakland scofflaw for what? Ten years! Sashaying down the boulevards, flaunting that 1879 law for all it was worth.

Seriously--I'm certainly aware that laws like that one used to be on the books, but I'd thought they'd all been amended by now. Guess not.

Obsolete laws abound here in the UK - only recently was a law repealed that stated taxis must carry a bail of hay - harks back to horse-drawn carriages. I also heard of another law repealed in my life time that allowed any MacDonald found in England to be shot of sight (1745 ordnance - Jacobite Rebellion) Thankfully I never heard of either of them being enforced.

Wonder how many other municipalities have such laws lying around in their lawbooks that we don't know about?
