It really comes down to who started the fight, which is not obvious in the article. Did the women spray him with mace as an offensive or defensive move?

The idea that it wouldn't have been self defense because she was a woman is pretty silly. But on the other hand he did have his numchuks really, which means he was approaching her with a weapon.
