On Halloween our band decided everyone would come in costume. So of course, as I posted here, I put on my witch drag. Several women in the band dressed as men, but I don't think any of the other men dressed as women. Ho hum........
I took a picture of myself posing with my neighbor's halloween display in his front yard. (We are friends, he was fine with this) Later on I showed him the picture. His comment: "oh, so you've got a secret" made in a very matter of fact way.
Let's leave aside the fact that posing in broad daylight on his front lawn is hardly secretive. I thought it was pretty intersting that he seemed to be able to make a leap from halloween costume to the fact that Halloween is the crossdressers national holiday. Or at least that's what I thought he was doing.
A couple of days later I was in my front yard while he worked in his front yard. He was playing the radio. He ran over to tell me that they were playing my song and had me come over. It was the Eagles doing Witchy Woman. This lead to another discussion, this time with me thinking maybe he thought I had another secret altogether and me explaining that my costume choice had nothing to do with a liking for the occult, wierd sex, or drugs (listen to the lyrics sometime...) Okay so I no longer take drugs and don't consider crossdressing weird. I guess that leaves not wanting to have anything to do with the occult, which is another big secret for some folks.
Anyway I found it quite interesting that he seemed to be able to read a great deal of subtext into the whole thing. Sometimes the rest of the world is more knowledgable than we think.
