Storing a wig

I would like to buy my first wig but am not sure how to store it. Given that I am out to my wife but not out (and never will be) to my kids, it needs to be stored discreetly. Do synthetics get damaged easily?

I have 5 synthetics wigs dear for whatever the mood I am in, you will need a form head to keep it on along with a hair net to help hold the shape.
If you get a wig from Paula Young it comes with a net but in a box for storage, must easyer to hide then a form head.
I am sure some of your sisters can also help you along with their advice.

Well, Virginia has about 15 synthetic wigs stored on styrofoam heads on the shelves in her closet.
She also has about 10 more stored in the boxes they came in; if she ever wants to wear one of these she just shakes it out first. Occasionally she'll also put it on a styro head to shape it.
Make sure you get a wire form for your wig, this will come in handy when washing it as it will allow it to dry completely. Also, make sure you use the shampoo for synthetic hair vs regular shampoo. All of these - and the styro heads, too - can be found at Sally's Beauty Supply; wig shops charge a lot more for the same product.
Almost all of Virginia's wigs came from Paula Young; not only do they have good prices and great sales but they also have an excellent return policy.

To answer the question about damaging easily... Nope unless you do the things the instructions that come with hair say not to do. If the hair was easily damaged, how could you wear it; just treat it nice and don't be tearing the tangles out, etc.
Now for storing. SilverLady's response is good by me too. I have foam heads and I have simply set them in a large box standing up with my human hair wigs. I have synthetics that I have laying nicely in a drawer. I have plastic, rather than wire, heads too; for air drying after the washing and for airing them over night for the days I wear them.

I put the hair net on it and then place it back in the box it came in.
I have a two piece form. Two flat pieces that easily fit together orthogonally to place the wig on for air drying and combing out, and are easy to separate and pack flat in the luggage or when stored.

Foam or wire heads are not a way to store wigs discretely, otherwise I would have known about the hubby years before.
We actually had this discussion not long ago, had something to do with Halloween costumes and such. Unless the wig is really curly, get those long plastic bags in the vegetable area at the local food mart. Place the wig inside by holding the wig upright in your hand and pulling the bag over it. Keeping it laid out flat a wig can be easily stored under rarely used clothing.
