Italian CD politician likely to win

I was in Jamaica last week, and saw a brief thing on a news broadcast-- I'm not sure if it was a Jamaican station or BBC-World. Apparently in the current election cycle in Italy, one of the candidates for a fairly important national post is a well known mtf crossdresser, and s/he has a very solid chance of winning, according to the broadcast. They interviewed her and she was articulate and attractive.
Besides feeling happy that we are becoming more visible and accepted, I was interested in the commentary about the leader of the opposition coalition, whose job is to pull all the minority factions together to effectively counter the majority party (of which this CDer was not a member). The discussion involved the difficulty of embracing both the very religious conservative folks and this CDer and her constituents. This will be interesting to follow, if mainstream media choose to carry it.
Sorry I don't have more details, but I didn't think to write anything down. Maybe someone knows more?
