Hi all,

Kay,

Sounds intriguing but... just the fact that, once again, transgender will be played for laughs (or so it seems, from the article's description) makes me think this will be a "pass" for the TG community. But who knows? The BBC usually has intelligent programming... well, except maybe in the comedy department, where the humour isn't always very subtle. Having said this, I've been a big fan of many Britcoms in the past (Are You Being Served?, Allo! Allo!, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, etc., etc.) so, again, who knows?

Amelia Bullmore certainly looks like she could--with a little help from the props department--pull off the role of transsexual "Emma." Hmmm... a transitioning transsexual woman put in charge of niece and nephew... The world being what it is, right now, this still sounds more like fantasy than comedy to me. I wish everyone associated with this project the best of luck!

CJ

I was not expecting to like this drama but in the end enjoyed it. This quote from the BBC Press release explains it much better that I can:-

"But for all that it is really comic. You believe in this set of people, and that these things could happen to them. It is a really brilliant script because it is a very clever portrait of a family and how they interact, from the dragonish mother down. These are all people who aren't programmed to let on that they care so there is a lot of really interesting stuff to play. And it looks at what's freak and what's normal. Who is to say that any of the rest of the family is any more normal than Emma is – she's obviously stuck her neck out and made a change, but all of them have got hang-ups, they all need love, they all want someone, they're all in between something."

Emmas' character was well played by Amelia Bullmore and her acting in the 'nude' scene at the end in my humble opinion was sympathetically done.

The part of Brendan/Emma in an ideal world maybe, should have been played by a real transitioning transsexual actress but the fact that is wasn't didn't make the play any less enjoyable.

So, Well done BBC!

Thanks also CJ for your contribution.
