New Wig

Post by Paula G »

I recently acquired a new wig ( note careful choice of words as this was not purchased new from a wig shop) now I have washed it it seems that it may well be a decent quality all human hair wig, about shoulder length, in many ways just what I could do with. My problem is that it is black, as in really black, while it fits nicely, is the right length and seems to be of good quality the colour is just scary. So here is my question I know from what I have read here and around that wigs can be styled, but can they be dyed? As I said it is all human hair so the hair should be OK what about the backing?

At the moment it makes me look like a "tranny in a bad wig" if I can't do something to tone down the colour I shall have to pass it on again.

Hi. A person here in Oklahoma that styles and maintains wigs assured me that a human hair wig can be colored, even have hghlights added, with little more difficulty than just cleaning and styling. From what I have seen of the pieces he has done, I think he is entirely correct. Among others, he maintains wigs for drag queens as well as CDers and early pre-op transsexuals. I don't know if you have wig shops in your area or not, but there are also salons who can do the job. His one caveat was that the wig must be in good shape.

I've colored and highlighted a couple of my human hair wigs. Certainly cheaper than buying a new one to get that type of styling done. As for being in good shape? Probably since any coloring isn't usually the best thing to do to hair. Also, if the hair is in poor shape all coloring is going to do is make poor hair colored; it won't help it.
