Hair Style

Post by Anne Bonny »

I have been wanting to find a shorter hair style that is pert and cute when I am feeling feminine, but can be combed behind the ears and over into a masculine style with no one thinking...he needs a hair cut! Kind of a razor's edge. Stuck at home as a care giver I do watch lots of video and have been observing two female reporters who have hair that is shorter than mine. Yet, these ladies are quite obviously feminine and pretty even with hair that is only a couple inches in length if that! How do they do it?

I think the shape and size of men's vs women's heads presents the largest challenge for men who want to have a shorter feminine style and look feminine. Men I read somewhere have a broader forehead and brow ridge induced by testosterone. Nothing we can do about that, like our broader shoulders, narrower hips, and larger biceps....our dragging knuckles....

What are these ladies doing besides the use of a little moose? well eyebrow shaping, make-up, and bangly ear rings help but their features are also finer than a man's.

I believe I will have to concede that the short short feminine style will never work on me as a man. I also think it will put an end to "would you like some off the top?" - "NOooooo!!!!" I think that is because volume will be critical, and the shortest length will probably be somewhere between allowing to ear lobes to show or a length that covers the ears but only just. I would like some cute flips starting above or behind my ears and toward the back of the head that many women sport.

I will definitely have to confide in a fairly private hair salon that serves men and women and find a stylist who is experienced and professional and then tell them what I am after...."I am transgendered and want to style my hair in a way so that it can be styled feminine or masculine." I think if I can find the right stylist she, or he, will be able to look at the shape of my head and advise me on what kind of style would look best, may be something I never thought of because this is not my area of expertise.

I suppose most people here will say....just grow it long and pull it back into a pony tail, lots of men have long hair...well not really at my age, 57, and in the deep south they don't. Others will say just buy a wig and be done with it! Problem with that is wigs are not my hair, they can be hot, and require storage space and special care and do not last if not taken care of Properly. I do have a wig obviously look at my profile picture I purchased it in 2006 so it is doing very well at 8 years...I keep it on one of those Styrofoam heads in a box and covered by a plastic bag and I very occasionally wash it with wig soap and always wear a nylon head cap under the wig when wearing it...but I want my own hair, as I would prefer to have my own boobs and nails.... Boobs I use an A cup and $15 gel inserts and that is fine because it is nearly natural.

So....waduyouthink?

It's not just the size of one's head, but the entire face really.

You could grow it longer, but not ponytail length. Touching the shoulders would be fine, but you'd need to learn how to curl it into a fem style. When in guy mode, just comb it all backwards and slick it down.

You are putting in a tall order, girl.

A lot of the 'tips and tricks' of passing writing that I have seen talk about illusion. Since the typical male has distinctive facial features, the trick is to divert the eyes away from them. Thus, the use of bangs and flowing locks. The wig you are sporting does a very good job of this (imho).

However, I totally get your motivations. Particularly the comments of comfort. So what to do....

Looking for a good stylist is a great idea. Of course, finding a hair stylist that isn't a big gossip, if common stereotypes are to be believed, might be problematic. Hope you are a big tipper.

I think that some of the GGs you observe with short hair have other things that can be leveraged.
Skin condition and make up being high on the list. A 'beauty' regime around night time moisturizing and wrinkle control can help a lot. Not all that noticeable in guy mode, but a better starting point when applying make up.

That's all I can contribute. Good luck. Keeps us posted.

Kelly.

THANK YOU THESE ARE PERFECT!!!! I like the first article best because it is a guy showing what is possible for guys. The second article shows lots of photos but all of women, and the size and shape of a woman's head just does not translate. Plus she is stating we should wear hair accessories or a fem hat, though she does talk about a cute haircut still both are great articles. Hum...cannot find when I got my last haircut because I paid cash...soooo must have been hummmmm???? Wonder if it may have been July? Base Barber you get scalped for $8.00 even if you say I like to wear it long, and of course they are taking it not only off the top but off of everywhere....I suppose if you die on a battlefield it is a virtue to be practically bald!!!!! On the other hand if you are dirty and sweaty and hot you really do not have time to do hair care when you are on the move and being shot at anyway.... I was or rather still have my RN license paid up but would be afraid to practice in a very clinical environment the basics and the background knowledge though are there getting vital signs, drawing blood, starting an IV, giving various injections and medications safely along with basic bedside care, dressings....and I can still teach diabetics but have not practiced since May of 2010 - even though the grunt care of my wife qualifies kinda sorta.

I am definitely not going back to a barber shop setting, am waiting for my hair to grow out, and plan not to have the top thinned out because I want length and volume. The first article is very helpful, think I will show it to our sitter, it is very interesting, anyway Thanks I really do appreciate it Kelly. I did work on my eyebrows to the extent possible a little thinning out at the bottom, on the inner edge and the outer tip, ensured nose hair was well trimmed, and then saw hair growing on my ears !!!! ewe!!! I suppose it's ok as a sailor helps you sense wind direction but a no no for us fem girls....Gone.

As this will be a permanent thing now that I have found myself I know I will need to leave it bushy (volume) and longer from now on I will just have to figure out how to style it into a longer guy style for guy days, as I say there is a masculine laid back weatherman who has a nice hairstyle that I really like but the problem is what works for one person may not work for another. Oh, I am not "admiring" the weatherman as a "hunk" no designs on him that way - I am heterosexual....but I am still interested in women in particular, but should I ever em...decide to bat for the other team, he will be the first one on my list...(movie Bridget Jones Diary - her "gay encounter" funny...) I do know the last time I let my hair get to "dufus", or ratty looking length I was able to achieve a fem look that was very pleasing I had not though figured out how to style it in a masculine way that I liked perhaps a little more length will be the key and a visit to a hair stylist. I am also planning on having my ears pierced but having to have a clear post in for several weeks is difficult to hide. I mean once you have permanent dimples in your ear lobes because they are pierced when you have been hiding and living a set presentation all of your life that little change seems HUGE!!! But I have found myself I am not about to deny myself the ability to enjoy hanging pretty bangles from my ears, the variety is so much better if your ears are pierced.
