What type of wig do you wear?

Post by Shelby »

I am a relative newcomer to this lifestyle and am discovering that there a lot of choices when it comes to wigs;

Synthetic, Real hair, open cap, capless, lace front; etc.

Which do you wear and why?

Oh, and the range in prices for wigs is outrageous. I haven't ventured outside en femme but, that is not to say that I never will. Consequently I have been purchasing the synthetic, regular cap style wigs. Inexpensive and look okay but, I am fairly certain it is obviously a wig.

Just wondering what everyone else is doing.

I'm currently wearing inexpensive synthetics with a regular cap. One thing no one mentions is the little nylon skull cap that goes under the wig. They come in two colors -- flesh and black. Depending on the color of my wig, I wear the little cap colored accordingly just in case there is a peek through now and then. Until you really decide what you are doing about your hair, don't be spending hundreds. As for why I went inexpensive? I change my wigs like accessories. I have been known to wear a different color four days in a row. Obviously people know I'm wearing wigs when I do that, but then I am not the only woman who wears a wig just because she wants to.

Go to a wig shop and try some on. Let them help you pick a style and color and let you inspect yourself from all angles before you buy anything. You don't need to be dressed to try wigs on and you don't need to make excuses; they really don't care about your gender. They will give you good service no matter what.

I agree with Davita,
I only went wig shopping twice, once in drab once in drag. Made no difference.
They are use to having CD's come in and shop, and they are there to help and make a sale.

Assuming you're not a drag queen performer, an inexpensive wig that covers your head will do fine. Lace front is for hiding the hair line. A style that does not show much forehead is better. Human hair is way too expensive. You should be able to buy on line a nice wig for $40-60. Keep it clean and it will last for quite some time.
If what you're wearing is obviously a wig, you need to get a different style or brush it out to fit your face. Lots of women wear wigs, you'll never guess how many.
