Paula, you may not like my answer but here it goes. Go into a department store that has sales associate's that know what they are doing. And ask for help. And then you will need to do some trying on to find what you want. It is a not a one girdle/shaper fits all. So trying on is really the only way to find what you like. IMHO and experience, be and act like a serious shopper and you will be treated with respect no matter how you are dressed male or femme presentation.
The firmness of a girdle is a personal preference along with what you can handle. Personally I like a moderate to very firm girdle. I have most Flexees girdles and some shapers. But I do have several other brands also. I prefer the older Flexees ones I have as they are more girdle and less shaper that the newer ones have gone more like. Flexees also cares the full range from a light to firm. But they really do not have a very firm one anymore. I also prefer boned ones as they do not roll down on me like most of the unboned ones do.

Kim thank you so much for ur reply. Fisrt of all, what is the difference bet a girdle and a shaper?. I thought they were the same. I think I prefer a girdle bec. I also wear stocking. If I were to purchase a firm girdle, should I get a little larger size as compared to a moderate. Thank you for your help.
Flexxes are made by Playtex aren't they? I also liked satin girdles when I began wearing my sister when living at home? Does any manufacturer make satin girdles anymore?i

Paula, yes there is quite a difference between a real girdle and a shaper although you often seen the terms interchanged. And also there is the grey area in the middle where the two meet and overlap.
A Girdle is on the Corset end of the scale and provide very firm body molding. And a good firm girdle is better support than many of todays cheap so called corsets. The better and firmer girdles are usually boned and have less give to them. They will mold your body shape.
A Shaper is on the Pantyhose end of the scale. They basically smooth out the body bumps and bulges. Does not do any real body shaping or molding.
Then of course they both vary in firmness and support and meet in the middle with some overlap. Flexees is made my Maidenform. Their current styles are in more of the middle area and a lot less like the girdle they use to be. Rago is a good firm girdle with some more traditional styles.
As for sizing it really varies by brand, model and what you like or want it to do. That is why I say it is best to try them on. I have girdles and shapers from 2x down to a medium and wear them all.

hi Paula
I've been a full time girdle wearer for the last 30 yrs. I wear one full time everyday. To me a real girdle has to have garters. I wear a high waist long leg with a split crotch the one I wear has a side zipper and is very firm. Its the Rago 6210 you can see them at orchardcorsets.com

i have open-bottom girdles, leg/zip-up girdles, shapers and corsets......what a collection.
so i'd say -- it depends! tah-dah.
one item - do you plan to wear hip or butt pads? if you do you want to go a size larger.
to really absolutely prevent roll go with something boned. i find the leg/zip-up the most difficult to wear, harder to get in and out of, not very forgiving on nylons, can induce roll of another nature (dunlap!) and can be very very hard to go potty!
for my part, i prefer open bottomed girdles and/or corsets, they give a nice smooth body-line, it's much easier to attach nylons to them, you can still wear lovely panties with them, and lastly.....it's a whole lot easier to go to the ladies room in a OBG or over-bust corset. just do not be cheap especially on a corset! they don't call these items foundations for nothing and just like the proverbial house, build on a solid foundation! lol
best i can offer.

Generally speaking, get a girdle 2" less than your waist size, otherwise the legs will be too loose. A high waist panty girdle usually will not rool over at the waist. Try a moderate hold first rather than firm to allow some give. A shaper is somewhat like a panty hose, will nmot hold in much

I don't wear panti girdles of any kind because they are hard to go to the bathroom in and after a while my privates get uncomfortable. I do have a very nice OBG with boning-it doesn't roll down and is easy to wear. Also I have one corset type bustier which extends to my hips, and a shaping slip which probably works best of all. I got it at J.C. Penney's. The hem tends to ride up put it still stays below my waist.
Most of the time however I either wear just a garter belt and thigh highs or else a pair of cuddle duds leggings which are warmer and a lot more comfortable in the winter. The OBG and bustier however are nice when my back is sore.
Stores that sell sexy lingerie (Not Victoria's Secret) are a great place to shop- they are often pretty used to male customers buying for themselves. Call first and ask, you can hide behind the anonymity of the phone call and if they are pleasant you will go into the store with a good feeling. If you are ever in New England Zoe and Co in both Rhode Island and New Hampshire ( I think, maybe Vermont) is great.
