I've gotten tired of putting runs in my stockings every couple of weeks, so I got a couple of pairs of ballet tights and use them as pantyhose. Not as sheer, but they last really well. They look like heavy black stockings. I don't think the other colors would pass for stockings as well however. Anyone else ever try this?

I did, when I had hairy legs.
I have some pantyhose that have been washed an worn a number of times, without running, so I usually just buy pantyhose now.

I have used tights to cover my dark, coarse thick leg fur.

I only wear tights in the cooler weather as they are cute add a different look other then stockings.
Now I learned how to put on and remove stocking at a young age as my mother told me I would have to buy my own because of putting a run in them

.
Keep your nails trimmed and keep them toenails filed down and smooth,
My stockings I hand wash and get many many wearing out of them

I use Secret tights, they are a heavier denier than pantyhose. They also give that snug feel around the legs, which is what I love about them. If anyone does not shave, it also does a good job of hiding hair. They last a really long time, if you take care of them.

Absaroka, what are you doing to get them to run so soon? Are you wearing and washing them over and over? Somewhere I heard that giving clothes a rest between washing and wearing cycles will get them to last a bit longer.
Are your finger nails in good shape? No raspy edges? Are you using the pads of your fingers versus your nails to pull with? Where are you snagging them? Do they always run in the same place? Lastly, are the hose too small forcing you to exert more effort than you should?
Now let's blame the hose. If the stock you have is old, like a years or more and you hadn't worn them yet, I've not had good luck with them, but I tend to lose a waist before I get a run. I'm not sure why not wearing hose will get them to be "unstable".
And to answer your question, I haven't tried anything but "normal" hose and tights. I had gotten a leotard when I was younger and got the tights that matched. hey maybe I did get what you asked. I never wore them out in public.

Davita the problem seems to be my very unladylike feet. I go barefoot as much as possible for about 5 months a year and the skin is rough. Even though I sand my feet in the autumn the skin tends to tear the stockings.

A few years ago the skin on my feet would crack and be rough enough to ruin nylons.
I started wearing the cheapest knee highs or trouser socks I could find under regural socks. The cheap ones were rough enough to wear away at the hard skin and leave it smooth. I did find that this method worked better than just a single pair of socks.

I use Lubriderm lotion (unscented) on my feet and legs when rough or dry to keep good skin tone which helps with dressing.

Every now and then I see a commercial for some lotion or other for rough and callused feet. I haven't seen that egg thing lately though. I don't go bare foot nearly as much as I used to, but if I feel my feet roughing up, I will take a stone to them in the shower. I'm not working to get all the callus off, but simply to reduce it and smooth it. I don't need to mess with the bottom of my feet even though that's where any of us should have the most callus.
I'd say you shouldn't wait till the fall to be working on those calluses, Absaroka. Just one more thing we girls do to try to be pretty.
