Creating a "style Board"

Recently I've been noticing that I have a wardrobe full of random clothes that are kinda difficult to put together. I'm still developing a femme style and so in some senses I'm making lots of "teenage" mistakes.

Anyway - true to form I have been reading a lot about fasion and style - not so much in terms of trying to get someone to tell me what to wear - but rather in terms of getting my head around what it is that I want to wear so that my shopping habit can be a little more coordinated (rather than ooooh that looks pretty - kerching!). *-*

So, in several of the books that I've read, they make reference to making a style board. This basically consists of a notice board on which you stick pictures of things you like. I had about a years worth of fasion magazines knocking about the house so I sat down and started cutting out pictures. The criteria I used was "If money was no object - would I wear this now?"

Pretty soon I had a board full of pics (and a good excuse to throw out all the magazines I'd been hoarding!).

Then I started looking at what I'd produced.... and it was really interesting. I began to notice that I'd picked many of the pictures because I liked the jackets that the women were wearing. It struck me that the jackets could be so flexible - formal, sexy, casual etc depending on what you paired them with. Then I realised that I don't have any jackets! Memo to self .... #-o

The other thing that I began to notice is that I actually like statement pieces. I spend an obscene amount on clothes each month - all of it from high street chains. When I look at the photo's and compare them with what's available in the high street i can see that I need to be a bit more selective. I think to date - because the seasons are so variable here (UK) - I've just been in this head long dash to try and get a basic wardrobe together, and to be fair that has been the right thing to do. But now I'm thinking that I would be better off buying just one or two pieces of clothing a month - things that really make me feel good.

Anyway - this post isn't particularly meant to be about me and my preferences - rather it was meant as a handy tip to suggest that this approach throws up some useful surprises.

Have a go! Its fun!

It sounds like something maybe I should do. I am good at buying a piece here and there and then not sure what to wear them with.

That sounds like a good idea, I'm going to start doing that. I have a pretty good idea in my head about what pieces I need to complete outfits, and when I'm shopping I usually buy something that I know will go with something I already have. But this sounds like fun and a good way to find some new ideas. My wardrobe is rather monotonous, mostly all similar colors and styles, which makes picking out things easier but can be sort of boring too. So I like this idea for trying new things.

Second pic, top right -gingham.. nuff said ;)

Those work for me! heehee

Actually, this reminds me of something i did years ago where id cut girls out, the same sort of pics as you have, and laminate them and stick them all over my tool boxes and the workshop wall  This was before i started dressing but i had dozens of them, OMG was that another subconcious sign of what was to follow??? Steph says yes it was...

*scratches head and adds it to the list...

I could post a pic from someone's blog that looks juuuuuust like the girl in that pic. Thought of you the instant I saw it. ;)

Ginny I think it's a great idea. I have a small collection of mostly random purchases, some of which go together, but only by chance. I have my faves that get worn the most and the rest, I'm not sure what to do with. I don't have any jackets either......

I find myself mostly overwhelmed by the variety of stuff and completely unable to make any kind of decision on what to buy.

I'm gonna give this a go, if nothing else it'll help me recycle some magazines and catalogues. At best, I may just learn something about what I like. Got any ideas on how I can filter out the stuff I can actually wear?!

Jackets are an essential! I have a nice denim casual and a couple of grey wool more formal jackets that are part of suits, but can of course be worn seperately, very useful.

Ok, note to self - must go jacket shopping (any excuse!)

I think this is where the 'style board' idea could help me, I really struggle to visualise myself in stuff, prolly cos I don't get out much :) and my 'Becca time' is so limited.

xx Becca, devoid of jackets xx

Thanks for your comments girls! Sooooo - Ralitsa and Rebecca .... did you have a go? How did you get on?

I had another look yesterday and noticed that there are an awful lot of "french style" clothes in there - think Toast. Also - I'd never thought of fingerless gloves as a way of adding layers.
