The Goodwill (or similar) store often has an excellent choice of items
They are happy to have you shop and the prices are very reasonable

Also every store has a clearance rack and you can get lots of good buys there too!

Be mighty well decked out

You go, Rhanda! Ditto Diane's comment- most of my skirts and dresses came via thrift shops, yard sales, etc. Almost none of them cost more than four bucks.

Virginia and I just love to shop at Goodwill . . . we call it the GW Boutique. We have found some excellent items there - check out my gallery and my bridal dress ($50.00) and Vera Wang gown came from GW. I was extremely lucky on the formal gown - valued at $3,000 and paid only $3.50 for it (obviously no one at GW checked the label, lucky for me!). My pool room jump suit also came from GW, as did my outfit in the photos with KathyB and Jaye.

The other formal gown I'm wearing came from the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop. Similar to GW but every item is individually marked and they're picky on what they accept.

Some areas also have a Salvation Army resale shop, and I've found some great items there, too.

Get your shopping gene on and have some fun!!

I agree! I've found some great buys at GW and others. Even small towns almost always have a thrift store or consignment shop. Especially at the change of seasons they will have a clearance making room for the next batch. I've bought tops for $1, skirts for a few dollars, nice dresses that were barely worn at all for $5. Of course they don't always have what you want at the time, so you might have to go shopping a lot. Oh how distressing that will be

Salvation Army stores are a good option to consider. Goodwill is privately owed, but they also provide decent job training.

My hubby has bought from Goodwill for work clothes for many years. Only in the recent few years, him opening up about being CD and me being more accepting, has he bought women's clothing there. I'm sure he was shopping there before then.

Figure out your waist size, GW has a great return policy, and buy some skirts.
Affordable wigs can be found at most local wig stores. Shop online for sales. Please don't get the cheapo kind. It will never look good enough and just waste your money.
http://www.paulayoung.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is where my tootsie buys from. Watch for the sale items.

Estate sales can be a gold mine - especially if the people were wealthy. I bought my first and only pair of Wolford nylons for $1, along with some Donna Karen and Givenchy pantyhose all in new unopened packages. Lots of expensive clothing, all too small unfortunately : (

Agreed. Estate sales have some amazing clothing for very cheap prices. I have picked up some amazing vintage lingerie for next to nothing. One sale I went to had an entire room of vintage lingerie. I bought about 200 pairs of panties from the 50's and 60's for about $30. All size large :). There were several women shopping in this room as I was shoveling the panties into my bag...they were looking at me real strange when one of them finally said..."what are gonna do with all those panties?"...I said that they were for me...they both giggled...one of my best "scores".

Scored again! At a near by estate sale I bought one pair of Victoria Secret and four pairs of Lord&Taylor pantyhose for $5. I'm wearing the VS as I type...so smooth and silky feeling!

I too have discovered the GW boutique.

The prices are amazing!

I've purchase 4 skirts, 7 shirts and 3 sweaters and think I spent a total of $50 there.

Well I finally did it. I found some buys that I couldn't pass up. A black pencil skirt and a sparkle black kowel neck top plus two v-neck sparkly swetters one gold and the other silver. All for $8.00. All new too. I tryed them on as soon I got home wearing them with sparkly black tites and my strappy hhhhhigh hell sandles. WOW!
Now, for the wig.
I'll try to take some pictures and post them.
