Getting makeup out of carpet

Post by Kelly »

Need some unusual tips and recommendations.

I have noticed that the (new!!!) carpet in my lovely daughters room has colorful specs of makeup in it. -,,- From the looks of things, I suspect that it is errant drips from the applicator of various liquid cosmetics. I do not think any of it is nail varnish.

Several attempts by her to clean it up have not born fruit. Before she does something that might set the stain, I thought I might solicit some suggestions.

My reasoning is that some hot soapy water, a good stiff brush, some elbow grease, and a shop-vac should take care of it.

By the way, I am trying really really hard to make this a 'teachable moment' rather than making it a war.

I would try plain bar soap with luke warm water first, let it soak for a loooooooong time, a couple hours at least, then try the shopvac.
If you can get some idea of what it is from reading all the labels on all the bottles of stuff that might have dripped, then one can decide whether and which other solvent to try.
I'd avoid hot water as it might cause it to set up, and luke warm water works just as well if you are patient.
If that doesn't work then move on to something stronger.

If all of the above recommendations do not work; Rent a steam cleaner from the
local hardware store or rent-all place.
Steam does soften a lot of stains, but if it is liquid that stained the carpet,
use Denatured Alcohol, or Lacquer Thinner first, then the steam cleaner.
Good Luck.
BTW, If the carpet is fairly new, it might have been treated with a "Scotch Guard"
type of stain blocker. If so contact the manufacture to use the correct product
to remove the stain without removing the Stain Guard.
