Can someone give me the basic levels of makeup?

What I mean is what are the main makeup types and layers to go with?

For instance, I think foundation is first then something goes over that I think.
Then you have mascara then I have no clue....

do you see what I mean, help!!!!

Luv Ginger...

Hey Ginger! We'll all have slightly different routines / techniques - but this is the order I use in the broad strokes.

1. Making up is like plastering in that the finished results are only as good as the surface you have prepared first. So make sure that you get real good at shaving.

2. Make sure you moisturise your skin every day - most do it twice a day. The condition of your skin will determine how good the final job is. It's best to use a moisturiser with an SPF included since sun damage is one of the major causes of the skin ageing.

3. Foundation comes in various forms - the less blue hue you have (the roots of dark hairs), the less foundation you need. If using a cream or liquid foundation, mix it with a little moisturiser and apply it evenly with a sponge (this stops it being streaky). Make sure you don't forget to do your neck - otherwise you will leave a tide mark - which is a dead give away! If you have very dark roots - you might want to use something to cover this before applying your foundation. Anything orange will do the job - have a look at something like Ben Nye beard cover. The foundation is there to equalise the colour of your skin.

4. It is possible to change the shape of your face using contouring techniques - these essentially blend light and dark shades to create the illusion of different features. Have a look on You tube - there are so many good tutorials. Lots of girls here have learnt that way. Have a look at how to use blusher and highlighter. Once you have reached this stage - apply fixing powder. This ensures that the foundation doesn't come off and helps blend everything.

5. Now do your eyes (some people do this before putting the foundation on so that disasters are easy to clean up). I often have to get changed in the car and so have developed a technique of leaving home having done my foundation - and then putting on the top layers once I am parked up. The amount of make up you use will vary depending on where you are going. A day look is quite different from the look you might go for if you are going out at night. Begin with a thin line of eye liner (again see You Tube). Then eye shadow and finally mascara. You can apply mascara in several layers to produce more dramatic results.

6. Apply lipstick. Our lips are subtly different. If you find it difficult to get a precise line around your mouth - you can use a lip pencil. If you are going to do this - cover your whole lip and then apply the lipstick (otherwise the lipstick could disappear and you are left with a line drawn around your mouth - not a good look).

Essentially - keep it fairly subtle and well blended. Find your own routine and research it like mad!

Hope this helps

Hugs Ginny xx *-*

Good advice, Ginny, but here's my differences:

3. Apply any cover-stick for blemishes, beard cover, etc. before applying your foundation; the foundation will now provide a uniform color (ie, no 'green' on top of foundation, etc.).

5. Eyes - I prefer to do them after I apply foundation because it's much easier to wipe off mistakes.

I believe there's an older, previous thread on this same topic . . . DonnaT is the magician when it comes to finding archived topics.

Keep experimenting, Ginger, and good luck!!
